As an ICIC staff and the Inner City Alumni Network (ICAN) Program Coordinator, I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in the world of networking from two distinctly different angles. And while each experience was unique, the underlying message was the same: the power of meaningful connections. During the spring, I attended and played a role in organizing several Strategic Alliance Building Seminars led by Susan Perkins. Dr. Susan Perkins, a Visiting Associate Professor of Strategic Management at NYU Stern, led the sessions with an engaging mix of storytelling, insights from the latest scientific research on networking, and a tailored approach to... She also shared insights on the types of strategic alliance partnerships that could benefit businesses.

While reaching out is certainly important, it’s often not enough on its own. The truth is that we routinely encounter barriers that block our efforts to make and strengthen meaningful relationships. Some of these barriers are byproducts of our psychological makeup, while others are the result of unseen social forces.

As a result, the path to connection is not always easy to navigate. In our new book Our New Social Life: Science-Backed Strategies for Creating Meaningful Connection, we explore seven key barriers to social connection and offer evidence-based strategies for overcoming them. We believe that, by addressing these obstacles, connection can happen more easily. So, what are these barriers? Here’s a sneak peek. As humans, we have a hardwired need for social connection—and we live happier, healthier, and longer lives when we’re closely connected to others.

Yet, in today’s world, socializing is often seen as a luxury rather than a necessity, which is why many of us push it to the bottom of our priority lists. We squeeze it in only after work, family obligations, and chores are done. Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that the average American spends just 34 minutes a day socializing. In the pursuit of success, the bridges we build with others often become the key to unlocking higher levels of achievement. Much like a navigator needs a destination before choosing a path, understanding what you want is the crucial first step on the journey to success. As in the story of Alice in Wonderland, not knowing your destination leaves you wandering aimlessly on any road.

Take a moment to close your eyes and envision the achievement of your goals. This visualization sets the foundation for the journey ahead. Knowing what you want provides clarity, acting as a guiding light through the twists and turns of your endeavors. Recently, I found myself grappling with a challenging business issue. The weight of the dilemma was taking a toll, leaving me anxious and unwell. In moments of introspection on my patio, seeking answers through meditation, the solution remained elusive.

Fortuitously, a scheduled meeting with a colleague, focused on assisting her in video creation, proved to be a serendipitous turning point. Despite a week-long struggle and my own inability to find a resolution, it was in the course of this meeting that I shared my predicament with her. Her fresh perspective offered a solution that resonated perfectly with the challenge at hand. Grateful for her insight, I immediately embraced the solution. What stood out was that the answer arrived not only at the precise moment it was needed but also from an unexpected source. Imagine this: You're at a networking event, surrounded by fellow nonprofit professionals and community leaders.

As you mingle and exchange stories, you can feel the energy buzzing in the room – the potential for new partnerships and alliances hangs in the air like a promise waiting to be fulfilled. But here's the thing: connection doesn't happen by accident. It requires intentionality – a willingness to step out of our comfort zones and truly engage with those around us. It's about more than just showing up; it's about showing up with purpose, with a genuine desire to contribute and collaborate for the greater good. In the nonprofit world, community is everything. It's our lifeline, our support system, our source of inspiration.

Yet, it's easy to get caught up in our own little bubble, focused solely on our organization's goals and objectives. But when we take the time to reach out and connect with others – when we approach community with an open heart and a spirit of generosity – amazing things can happen. Collaborating with other organizations also offers myriad opportunities to expand your reach and deepen your impact. Imagine this: Two nonprofit organizations, each with their own unique strengths and resources, coming together like puzzle pieces fitting perfectly into place. Together, they create something greater than the sum of their parts – a collaborative effort that reaches farther and achieves more than either could alone.
