The program takes place in Lansing, Michigan with internships available in a variety of legislative, governmental, and special interest offices. All students, regardless of major and year, are encouraged to apply.​​ This is a tremendous opportunity for CMU students to learn the critical role government plays on campus and in our communities. Academic credit can also be obtained with approval from a faculty advisor.

Responsibilities vary by the type of office the student interns within. Common responsibilities across all offices may include, but are not limited to: Many legislative office internships will involve significant research into specific policy areas such as education, health, taxes, and transportation that will depend upon the individual legislator’s committee assignments. Many state department internships will involve work specifically related to that department’s functions such as human resources management, environmental protection, or social work as a few examples. Ideally, you will gain insight into whether you want to pursue a particular career and will gain connections to professionals working in that field. Priority Consideration for Scholarships: Dec. 1 Economics makes you a better decision maker. Law sharpens your skills of reasoning and argument. Central Michigan University's law and economics major puts those disciplines together, giving you the insight into the boardroom or the courtroom.

As a law and economics major at CMU, you’ll learn to think critically about complicated situations and gauge how others are likely to react. This unique program is one of just a handful in the United States. If you want to go to law school, you'll get reasoning and argumentation skills you'll draw on for years to come. And you'll get a broad overview of individual rights and our legal systems that complement work in many other disciplines. Classes in economic theory will contribute to your analytical and decision making skills. Business law courses will expose you to basic legal concepts, such as contracts and property rights, various issues in discrimination, and regulatory environment of business.

Beyond that, have the freedom to take courses in other areas that interest you. (A variation of this program is also offered through our College of Business Administration. Students in that program take more required business courses, and take fewer elective classes.) They are all WMU alumni or current students who have participated in the Department of Political Science’s renowned internship program.

“I’ve got 988 names,” says Houghton, who implemented the program and has served as its sole director over the years. “I never would have dreamed these numbers would reach that high. We started in 1978 with just a couple of interns in Kalamazoo Township.” A longtime political science faculty member, Houghton has always been an advocate of experiential learning. Early in his teaching career at Western, he saw the value of giving students the opportunity to experience the inner workings of a government office firsthand. After arranging those first few internships in Kalamazoo, his network of professional contacts seeking interns began to grow.

“I read the paper all the time,” Houghton says. “Any time there was a new city manager or township director, or a new judge elected, I would call them cold to see if they would be willing to take an intern from Western. “Then people started calling me, saying they wanted interns,” Houghton explains. “So it worked out nicely. There’s a huge variety of places to work, depending on a student’s career interests.”
