The Department is studying the role of language and communication for individuals, communities and society. Multidisciplinary and up-to-date research responds to the challenge of contemporary society to understand the diverse and changing linguistic and communicative landscapes of our environment. Research and education are intertwined, with the aim of providing students with the linguistic and communication skills needed for future professional careers. It is also an active contributor to society. The Department of Language and Communication Studies aims to provide students with the versatile skills required for professional positions in languages, communication and media. This competence is based on solid theoretical knowledge of language and communication theory, critical thinking and ethical reasoning, creative problem-solving and collaboration skills, and mastery of communication technologies.

An important starting point is literacy, based on an understanding of the role of language, communication and media in a diverse society. International students wishing to complete a full degree with us may apply for the following Master's degree programme: The Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies conducts research that produces timely, internationally significant and socially relevant scientific knowledge in its areas of strength. Many English-taught and bilingual degree programmes require courses in academic English, research communication and/or working life communication skills and team work. Many programmes also require Finnish as a second language courses on suitable level from international students and other language and communications studies from Finnish students. In addition to the required communication and language courses, students can and are encouraged to study more and other language and communication courses as elective language and communication studies.
