They all capture the same cozy yet thrilling spirit of solving a puzzle. In for a Murder is a Polish murder mystery based on a novel by Katarzyna Gacek. Set in the sleepy town of Podkowa Leśna, it follows Magda (Anna Smołowik), a bored housewife with a penchant for Agatha Christie novels. While walking her dog, she discovers the body of a dead woman wearing a necklace identical to that of her missing friend, whose disappearance has haunted her since she was a teen. Magda tries to solve the murder, crossing paths with an old friend, Jacek Sikora (Paweł Domagał), the detective in charge of the case.

As the story progresses, the layers are peeled back on the seemingly idyllic town, with old secrets rising to the surface. Part of the movie's charm is watching Magda's endearing character use her mystery novel reading experience to get to the truth, going against the traditional detective approach. Although the movie features a dark mystery, it manages to keep a lighthearted tone all throughout. Adapted from the first novel in The Enola Holmes Mysteries series by Nancy Springer, Enola Holmes focuses on the younger sister (Millie Bobby Brown) of Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin). On her 16th birthday, Enola discovers her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) missing. Despite her brothers, whom she's never really known, carting her off to boarding school, Enola heads to London, following the clues to her mom's whereabouts.

Once there, she becomes entangled in a bigger mystery. Since the dawn of prestige television in the early 2000s, mystery series have become more powerfully realistic, and emotionally complex. But sometimes all you want is a cozy mystery TV series that will make you feel relaxed, entertained, and emotionally better off than when you started it, with trusted actors and actresses playing characters... Shows like True Detective may have won Emmys (and reignited the career of Matthew McConaughey), but they won’t leave you feeling soothed or particularly optimistic about the world. The best cozy mysteries come in many forms. The Hallmark Channel's movie series fall squarely within the category, as do many British mysteries.

These shows often feature amateur detectives with unique qualifications and quirky personalities that help them see the world differently from their neighbors or the local police force. Add an eccentric sidekick or best friend to the mix, and a light sprinkling of intrigue, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a great cozy mystery show that won’t give you nightmares or... Is Hetty Wainthropp Investigates Watchworthy? When you want to watch a cozy British mystery, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates will bring you all the comfort you’re looking for. Starring Keeping Up Appearances’s Patricia Routledge as the 60-year-old working-class housewife-turned-amateur sleuth of the title, it features PG-rated mysteries with tidy resolutions that make the world seem like a safer, calmer place. Hetty appears to be an average retiree living a quiet life with her husband in a nondescript part of England, but when she hits 60, she realizes her sharp intelligence, sense of justice, and...

Sticking to her motto of “no sex scandals, no divorce, no drug-running, and no industrial espionage,” she looks into muggings, elder abuse, and nasty letters, all while assisted by her right-hand man and semi-adopted... Hetty Wainthropp bears significant similarities to Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, but she’s tougher, more direct, and more streetwise than Marple, and the 1990s setting makes for a less idealistic depiction of England. The dynamic between Hetty and Geoffrey is one of the most charming parts of the show, and their relationship develops throughout the series while Hetty’s unadventurous husband grumbles over their exploits. It’s the kind of gentle, plucky mystery series that doesn't get made anymore, and it’s guaranteed to take the edge off whatever stress you might be experiencing. Watching television is my job, but it is also sometimes a recreation. The first is a solitary occupation, the second mostly shared with the person I live with, which makes it a matter of shared taste and promoting domestic harmony.

Among the shows we’re most likely to watch are mysteries, but not just anything with a murder. We tend to avoid anything described as “dark” or “gritty” in favor of what are often called “cozy mysteries.” The heroes are typically amateur or private detectives, possibly quirky, often women, sometimes a couple; they aren’t likely to suffer the afflictions common to the hard-boiled shamus — depression, rage, alcoholism, untreated trauma. Cozy mysteries give you the benefits of more uncomfortable mysteries — the suspense, the puzzles — without the gore, the sensationalism, the foregrounded perversity. The stories often are set in small towns, in rural or far-flung settings, satisfying as a bonus the urge to travel. (Or they are period pieces, satisfying the urge to time travel.) Even when not outright comedies, they will have a comic streak, and though they involve people killing people, sometimes for the saddest reasons,...

Romance is often on the cards. Murder is almost beside the point. 9:23 a.m. June 5, 2022An earlier version of this article incorrectly attributed the characters Nick and Nora Charles to Raymond Chandler. Dashiell Hammett wrote “The Thin Man,” the detective novel in which they appear. 7:43 a.m.

From slapstick comedy to snooty stoicism, British television is a soothing escape from troubled times. Plus all those great accents. If you love a good mystery without the gore, dark drama, or nightmare-inducing plot twists, then cozy mystery TV shows are for you! These shows are the perfect mix of intrigue, warmth, and community.

They’re like a big mug of tea with a splash of crime-solving on the side—safe, satisfying, and often sprinkled with humour (or even a little magic). Whether you’re new to the genre or looking for more to binge, here are the best cozy mystery TV shows guaranteed to make you feel good while still keeping you guessing. A cozy mystery is a subgenre of crime drama that avoids graphic violence and gritty realism. Instead, expect: ✔ Amateur detectives (writers, bakers, gardeners—ordinary people with extraordinary curiosity).✔ Picturesque settings, from quaint villages to historic cities.✔ Lighthearted tone, often with a dash of humour or romance.✔ Satisfying endings—the bad guy always gets... If you enjoy charming stories that feel like a warm hug, you’re in the right place.

Why You’ll Love It: Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher is an icon of the genre. A mystery writer who solves murders in small-town America (and beyond), she’s smart, warm, and utterly loveable.Streaming: Peacock, Amazon Prime. I know that as readers, some of you may frown at the idea of television shows— But, I am including this category for those of you who might like watching a few hours of... I have found that with each passing year, my husband and I have less and less “in common” with the characters and shows that are being broadcast on television—and that’s including all of the... It is for this reason, we have joined online movie rental companies, and we also buy DVDs online. That is how we can watch the types of shows that we enjoy.

Now that we are “empty nesters” we are able to watch the movies and shows that appeal to just the two of us. These include a lot of BBC series, some of which have been shown in the United States on PBS and A&E…unfortunately, years ago! Most of you are probably familiar with a lot of these shows, but some of you may just need a reminder of what I consider shows of yesteryear, which are good enough to re-watch... Of course, some of the shows are new shows being aired right now… some on PBS and others you’ll have to go to Great Britain to watch. I have decided to do this section a little differently from the rest of this site. I am going to write about the shows in my blog area instead of doing different pages.

I will provide a link from the title of the show/movie on this page to the page where I write about that particular movie/show. I think that this might be the easiest way to do this…. I love a good mystery, but I don't always want to watch something that leaves me sleeping with the lights on. These shows deliver the intrigue and clever twists I crave, minus the gore and jump scares. Castle has a simple but effective premise: Renowned mystery author Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) helps homicide detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) solve various murders in New York City, using his background as a writer... It's not an altogether unserious affair when it comes to the crimes the duo solves, but Fillion's endless charm lends the show a ton of easy-going levity, and I find myself laughing a lot...

While Castle is more of a case-of-the-week experience, if you're looking for some overarching stories, fear not. The unsolved murder of Beckett's mother prior to the show's start will provide you with plenty of mysterious intrigue. And the chemistry between Katic and Fillion makes their characters' slow build of a romance just as much of a reason to watch as the cases they solve together. What happens when you combine the comedic genius of Martin Short and Steve Martin with a little murder? The endlessly hilarious Only Murders in the Building. Martin and Short are joined by the equally funny Selena Gomez as the trio works to solve murders, usually within their apartment building, the Arconia.
