Cozy mystery books often have lighthearted, colorful covers featuring images of the sleuth, pets, hobbies, occupations, settings, and/or themes. Cozy mysteries, also known as cozy crime books, are a subgenre of crime fiction. Cozies have certain elements that make them “cozy.” For example, they often feature charming settings, fun hobbies, cute pets, descriptions of yummy food, and, most importantly, an amateur sleuth.

They do not typically contain gruesome crime scenes, detailed forensic descriptions, psychopathic serial killers, or hard-boiled homicide detectives. A well-known example of of a cozy mystery is Murder, She Wrote (both the television show and book series). Other examples of cozy mysteries include: Amish Candy Shop Mysteries by Amanda Flower Camper and Criminals Mysteries by Tonya Kappes Murder mysteries are killing it, according to recent book sales and TV ratings.

There’s no strict definition for the cozy mystery, though the main rule of thumb seems to be that the story contains no graphic violence and generally, no swearing or sex. These are more lighthearted crime narratives—you won’t be so disturbed that you need to sleep with lights on. A focus on plot and character development ensures a predictable and reassuring experience offering escapism without being too heavy.Importantly, the cozy mystery’s protagonist is an amateur sleuth who uses intellect and life experience to...

Think Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple. These affable amateur detectives typically have an emotional investment behind their probing. They also know their neighbor’s quirks and habits, elicit confidences, and ultimately work out the solution before law enforcement does. Besides a crime-solving amateur sleuth, cozy mysteries enjoy other appealing conventions. The stories have humor, idiosyncratic secondary characters, and closeknit communities where everyone knows each other. The victim is generally unlikeable.

While the amateur detective may have some “in” on the police force, officers find them meddlesome. And there’s often a quaint or charming element—an animal sidekick, for example. Cozies are usually fast-paced and involve at least one unexpected turn of events and red herrings to distract us. And we can count on things being put right again by story’s end. Cozies harken back to a literary era between World Wars known as the Golden Age of Detective Fiction when writers (often British) like Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, G.K.

Chesterton, and Ellery Queen published classic “whodunnit” detective novels. Their work playfully misleads readers while simultaneously encouraging them to solve the crime alongside the protagonist. Remote settings like an English country house or an abandoned island were featured, as well as a short-list of suspects from distinctive upper-class professions, and bodies discovered in unlikely places.Agatha Christie is now considered... National Cozy Mystery Day is observed on her September 15 birthday. A murder at a retirement village solved by the residents? Sounds like a great plot for a mystery book.

Several murders at a retirement village solved by the residents? Even better. These plots are examples of “cozy mysteries,” a genre that's seen a boom in recent years. Nicole Lintemuth, the owner of bookstore Bettie’s Pages in Lowell, Michigan, first noticed an uptick during the pandemic when readers gravitated toward more lighthearted books. She's hosted readers every month at her virtual "Cozy Mystery Book Club" since 2021. “They’re always kind of slightly ridiculous and I love that the genre leans into it,” Lintemuth says.

“It doesn’t take itself super seriously.” "Cozy mystery" is a subgenre of mystery books. In a cozy mystery, you’ve got the classic elements of the sleuth and the caper, but the blood and violence happen off the page. The person solving the crime is also not a seasoned detective – they're more likely to be a bookseller, baker or even a senior citizen. They also often have animal sidekicks and the stories take place in small towns, which adds to the oddity of the murders. Many cozy mysteries are series, letting the reader fall in love with these eccentric detectives through several escapades.

And as the “cozy” suffix suggests, the books are meant to leave the reader feeling warm and fuzzy even if the plot involves murder. Solving this puzzle may come at a deadly cost. Can she crack the case before the murderer strikes again? Welcome to a SPOOKtacular Halloween in Clover Creek! Can Savanna Shepherd discover who’s behind a deadly art heist before her New Year’s Eve wedding? Her Christmas cupcakes were a hit, but her customer's death lands her on the naughty list.

Wren Winters and her friends road trip to an annual gaming convention anticipating a fun getaway, not danger and a dead body. Cozy mysteries hold an interesting position in crime fiction. These charming tales offer an inviting escape into small-town settings with quirky characters and clever puzzles. What they don’t do is describe the crime in detail. Unlike almost every other form of mystery fiction, there’s no blood, no gore, no description of the body which makes the reader want to close their eyes. It is the desire of the cozy reader, and the task of the cozy writer, to discuss the crime in a way which keeps those details to a minimum, while still exposing the clues...

When crime takes on a gentle, quaint demeanor, it is difficult to imagine the most brutal of events. And yet, murder is by far the most common crime seen in cozy mysteries. Without anything other than intuition, I’d guess that nine out of ten cozies involve murder. But there are others, so let’s take a look: The early days of classic mystery featured murder in all its forms. Open any Agatha Christie and there’ll be a dead body somewhere.

Her style, and those of her contemporaries, was to find a body in a bathtub or on a study floor, usually in a locked room. From there we get the investigation, but descriptions of how the victim died are minimal, almost always related to a clue of some kind. A cozy mystery transports the reader to a place they wish they could visit. The towns are picturesque, the neighbors are friendly, every small business seems to thrive. Everyone in town seems to have a fantastic life. Unless they wind up dead.

Cozies don’t rely on shock and gore. Instead they engage readers with entertaining and clever stories of murder and intrigue and with puzzles that must be solved. Most stories feature a fabulous female sleuth, a love interest (or two) and an ensemble of heartwarming (and often very quirky) side characters. CozyCrime readers are simultaneously looking for a warm and inviting place to visit and the chance to catch the bad guy. They crave ways to use their brains, hearts and imaginations. They find joy in their hero’s successes and thrill of the chase.

That’s what makes this community so special.
