The Citizens Research Council of Michigan offers unpaid internship opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students in political science, public administration, economics, or related fields. Internships offer the opportunity to work with the Council’s research staff to conduct research, develop policy papers, prepare presentations, and provide support in other office affairs. Internships may be used to satisfy school requirements or simply to gain experience in the study of public policy analysis. The internships will last for an agreed upon number of weeks with time in the office ranging from 16-40 hours per week. Internships may be arranged in our Livonia or Lansing offices. Applicants must be willing to abstain from political activity (lobbying, campaigning, circulating petitions, fundraising for political candidates or causes, contacting the media related to political causes, etc.) during the internship period.

The Citizens Research Council of Michigan is a private not-for-profit public affairs research organization founded in 1916 to analyze issues pertaining to state and local government organizations and finance in Michigan. The Citizens Research Council has a limited number of unpaid research internships available to undergraduate and graduate students working towards a degree in public administration, public policy, economics, political science, or a related field. The Citizens Research Council has a full-time research staff that conducts research focusing in four areas: 1) In-depth studies of major public policy issues; 2) Analyzing state and local tax and spending issues; 3)... Interns will work directly for one of the Research Council’s researchers and assist in the development of research papers and presentations. Through its research and publications, the Citizens Research Council provides an independent, nonpartisan, and objective source of information on state and local policy issues. It seeks to identify problems, to prepare the factual information needed to define and understand those problems, and to develop and evaluate alternative solutions.

Over the years, the Research Council has earned a reputation for objectivity and has developed a high degree of credibility with public officials, the media, and the public. In order to encourage public understanding and discussion of state and local government issues, the results of all the Research Council’s projects are available to the public. Personal interviews (in our offices or by phone) are required of individuals whose initial application and supporting documents place them high enough to be considered further. It is expected that an intern would work 16-20 hours a week, at a minimum, in the Research Council’s Livonia or Lansing office.
