This guide will help you find recommended resources for research in American Studies. Use the tabs on the left to navigate this guide. These sections will help you find different types of materials (ex: books, media, primary sources, data), along with starting points and strategies for your research. This guide is selective and intended as a point of departure for research in American Studies.

This guide contains, largely, resources listed by disciplines (Literature, Music) or topics (contemporary language) of interest to American Studies. It will also offer suggestions for how to search for print and electronic holdings at Hesburgh Libraries. Although not possibly comprehensive, it serves as a place to begin your research. Also includes reference books (World Almanac, American Heritage Dictionary), biographies, speeches, images, and other primary source documents. The EBSCO Mobile app for iOS and Android lets users search Academic Search Complete and view or listen to chapters/content sections. JSTOR provides access to millions of journal articles, books, images, and primary sources in 75 disciplines. The Archive Journal Collection is included.

The main search box on the Library home page will retrieve material from several different sources: the CU Library catalog, article databases, and library web sites. Clicking on the links below the search box (Catalog, etc.) will limit your searches to that particular source. The Cornell Library Catalog includes the holdings of all Ithaca campus libraries. The catalog contains records for books, computer files, government documents, manuscripts and archives, maps, musical scores, periodicals, serials, sound recordings, and visual materials. The "All Fields" search will retrieve matches for your search terms wherever they appear in the description of an item, but you may use the pulldown menu to the right of the search box...

The Cornell University Library uses Library of Congress Subject Headings as the standard for subject searching. Limit your search to Subject to retrieve items that contain your terms as part of their LC heading: If you find one book relevant to your subject, you can identify others by clicking on the subject heading in the record for that book: Find biographies of over 19,000 deceased men and women who made significant contributions to building the United States. 1 simultaneous user.
