A dictionary is a book or electronic resource that lists the words of a language and explains their meaning, or gives equivalent words in a different language, usually providing information about pronunciation, origin and... A thesaurus lists words in groups of synonyms and related concepts.

Authoritative resource on the English language, with information describing the meaning, tracing the history, and clarifying the pronunciation of more than 500,000 words in English. Dictionaries provide an alphabetical list of entries for words, with each word entry containing information about the word's form, pronunciation, meaning, history, and uses. Dictionaries help us understand words' meaning and conventional usage. Dictionaries also provide the etymology of terms and can be useful for establishing the emergence of a word’s forms and senses. Our collection includes dictionaries that provide equivalent words in many global languages. This guide focuses on fundamental tools but the library also has many specialized dictionaries, including names of key figures, words, definitions, and/or other information related to particular topics (e.g. marine science) or fields of study (e.g.

art history). Thesauri help us relate words to one another by providing lists of terms with similar and opposing meanings. We have included some of our most used thesauri but these too can be quite diverse; our collection includes multilingual thesauri, including Old English, and specialized resources, like this NASA thesaurus explaining relationships between... Most commonly, dictionaries provide definitions of words, along with other information like: pronunciation, history of the word, or its use in a sentence. Dictionaries may also provided translations of words (such as in a Mandarin-English dictionary) or focus on words used within particular disciplines (like Stedman's Medical Dictionary). Thesauri typically provide synonyms and antonyms to particular words, helping you find just the right one to use in a sentence. Oxford's most comprehensive dictionaries and thesauruses of current English including more than 350,000 words and phrases, and more than 1.9 million example sentences. This product contains the Stedman’s Medical Dictionary including a broad range of full color illustrations, videos and reference materials. It also contains The Acland’s Atlas of Human Anatomy video series, the Health and Nursing Dictionary, Dental Dictionary and Pocket Medical Dictionary.
