Resolutions express the opinions, recommendations for action, and directives of various bodies of the UN. The General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, and Trusteeship Council all issue resolutions. Voting records may be available for the General Assembly or the Security Council. Many General Assembly Resolutions and Decisions are passed without a vote or without recording the votes of individual members; however, in certain situations, the individual votes of member states are recorded and available. Individual votes on Security Council Resolutions are typically recorded. Voting records may be found officially as part of Meeting Records or unofficially as part of Press Releases or as separate compilations.

Speeches and statements are often given during the meetings of the various UN bodies and may be helpful for the researcher in learning more detail about a given topic. Depending on the body meeting and the topic discussed, some speeches are recorded verbatim whereas others are only summarized. In the UN document symbol, those that have been recorded verbatim are identified as PV and those that are only summarized are identified as SR. There are two main categories of UN meeting documents: provisional verbatim records (PV) and Summary Records (SR). PVs contain 1st person accounts of a meeting while SRs are third person summaries. As a general rule there will be either a PV or and SR but rarely both. UN meeting records are also divided into Official Records or Masthead documents. Official Records are the official summaries of meetings of the General Assembly (GAOR), the Security Council (SCOR), and Economic and Social Council (ESCOR). When the Trusteeship Council meet regularly it published Official Records.

Some major conferences also produce Official Records. In addition to the meeting records, the Official Records for each year include supplements and annexes with texts of resolutions passed, and reports from UN subsidiary agencies. Penn State has a complete set of UN Official Records in paper. Meeting records that are not part of the Official Records Series are often called Masthead documents and are available in microfiche in the University Libraries Researching UN speeches is a good way to understand a country's position on pressing international issues. Heads of State generally speak at the General Assembly meetings each year and each country's representatives promote their nations official views.

The UN Digital Library allows users to search for voting information on adopted resolutions of the Security Council and General Assembly. The datasets provide historically comprehensive voting information for each UN Member State. Alexander Library has been collecting United Nations documents and publications useful in conducting research for Model UN since 1945.

The collection is in open stacks, but doing research for Model UN and locating relevant sources may require some experience with the documentation. This guide is designed to get you started. If you received a Model UN packet, bring it with you. The packet generally contains a bibliography that will provide citations and save valuable time in tracking down appropriate material. Some general sources noted below may prove useful in your initial Model UN research.
