Here are what their experts had to say about two important questions: “It is important that diverse perspectives and voices are included in any setting, including within classrooms and youth groups, in order to foster a societal culture of tolerance, respect, and understanding. Any processes which look at addressing conflict within a society are more effective when a range of perspectives—which represent the true breadth of the population—are included. If young people are exposed to a broad variety of viewpoints, rather than absorbing only entrenched and one-sided narratives, they are more likely to strive for peace. Engaging with these perspectives makes us better as a community. We learn, we empathize, and we grow towards deeper understanding of the world in which we pursue our work. More broadly, fostering a diversity of perspectives is central to the mission of a world-class academic institution tasked with generating the ideas that shape a better, healthier world. It helps us to think critically, to see when we are wrong, and to improve at what we do. A university rests on a foundation of free speech and open debate. This foundation is strongest when everyone is included.
Indeed, there may be some within our community who hail from a context where an inclusive public debate is not the norm, where social inclusion is determined by identity, class, adherence to a given... It is important to learn from the perspective of those who have experienced such places, so we might better appreciate and support inclusivity within our own community. The modern era needs different kinds of people to help businesses succeed. These people have different backgrounds and experiences. Diversity means having people who look different or people with different beliefs and education. Our differences can help us generate new ideas and be more creative when we work together.
