This year at STEM, I was a 10th Grader; because of this, my classes were a lot harder and required me to manage my work and be organized. Since I planned what I had to work on and when ahead of time, I developed the strength of time management. I have learned how to use my study time effectively to prepare for my tests and quizzes, and I have learned how to manage my time spent on projects. My first example of how I grew in time management is not procrastinating. In Language Arts, we had to read the book, “Fault in Our Stars.” In addition to reading the book every week, we would have a weekly quiz. On the very first quiz, I read the week’s section the first day and when it came time for the quiz, I had forgotten most of the details.
As result I didn’t do as good as I could have done. Because reading the book at the very first day didn’t work out so well to prepare for the quiz later in the week, I decided to read it the day before the quiz. This worked for most of the quizzes, and I got high grades on all of them except Quiz 4. The night before the quiz, I had lots of homework to do, and I was working on another project. When it came time for the day of the quiz, I had only managed to read some of the section and skim the rest. I ended up getting a low “C” on Quiz 4.
I realized that my strategy was not working and changed it to manage my workload better. Whenever I had time in the week, I would read that week’s section and review the section the day before the quiz. Thanks to this system, I was able to get a good grade on my final book quiz. Another example of my growth in time management is my genocide poster project. This project was about creating a poster to teach about our assigned genocide. We had to carve a linoleum stamp for the poster in history, and write an artist statement for language arts.
When we started the project, I immediately wanted to work on the more fun (in my opinion) part of the project, which was carving the stamp. Therefore, instead of writing the artist statement I started to cut the linoleum and work on my stamp. Throughout the project, there were multiple times when I almost turned a paper in late or just finished something in time. Eventually, I wasn’t able to make the deadline, I had to turn the artist statement outline in late, and because I didn’t put much effort into in, I got a bad grade on it. After this mistake, I started to focus more on the written assignments. After a little bit of time, I was able to catch up on the language arts portion of the project; however, I started to fall behind on the history portion.
Eventually, I found a balance where I could be caught up on both sides, but I wasn’t proud of either side. I finally decided after a week of this balancing act that I was going to work on the writing at home and work on the stamp at school. This change helped me earn a good grade at the end of the project because I managed my time wisely. The last example of how I grew in time management is now I know how to study effectively. When we first started Chinese this year, I thought it would be easy because I did great last year without having to study a lot for the quizzes. Plus, I did great on the first test this year so, I assumed I wouldn’t have to study a lot to get a good grade this year either.
The problem with that mindset was when I did start to struggle with the new words; I didn’t think anything of it. I just assumed that eventually, I would understand what they meant in Chinese and how to use them. I started to focus on other things and never studied the words I was struggling with. In reality, I was really struggling in Chinese, and I had no idea what the assignments meant. I only had an “A” because of the easy homework assignments. It was not until I got an exam back with a “C,” that I realized I needed to change what I was doing.
Every time we got new words, I would practice until I understood the vocabulary so I would be able to understand in class. Whenever I didn’t have any homework, I chose to study Chinese to help me keep up in class. At the end of the quarter I was able to get high “B’s” or “A’s” on all of my weekly quizzes. In conclusion, this year at STEM I grew in time management. I learned the value of not procrastinating with assignments. I was able to learn how to balance assignments during project work as to not fall behind.
Finally, I learned about the importance of making time to study. Thanks to this year at STEM, I will be able to manage my time wisely in future grades and after I graduate. To excel in something means you’re really good at something, like if I got an A in a math I would have excelled in it. However, I did not excel in math, but instead, I exceled in Unreal, a 3D modeling and simulation software. Unreal was a project we started in 1st quarter US History where we were tasked to make a virtual history museum using the software Unreal. Our first task was to make an exhibit for women’s history.
I had some previous experience with Unreal in my seventh grade STEMersion where we just learned the basics, but that was it. We started by doing a tutorial assignment which was easier than I ever thought it would be. It was as if something had clicked because I understood what almost everything meant, and I was so excited to continue. It got to the point where I was able to teach and help my fellow classmates finish their assignments because I was already so far ahead. My first artifact is a screencast recording of my museum when we had finished our first exhibit. It shows how my museum was polished and looks complex from the very beginning even though I didn’t need any help.
My second artifact is my museum after my final exhibit. Even though the quality of the visual aspects are consistent between the two artifacts, they still show how I made it even better with more complex blueprints and scripted events. The nice thing about this project being so easy for me is I found out how much I enjoy 3D modeling and simulation softwares. I’m now in a club for it and doing my 9th grade STEMersion about the same thing. One day I even hope to pursue a career in this type of work. 10th grade personally, has been an extremely eventful year, both in and outside of school.
I had lots of time to learn and grow, and overall, become a better person. Some skills I had gained this year are; maturity, determination, and independence. I started gaining some of those skills as early as the first few weeks of school during the poetry project. Some others came later during the island project in Biology. And others were form more insignificant things like a quiz in Algebra 2. Let me slow down, how about we just talk about one?
The first project of the year. The poetry protect was a simple project where we were to write a project at the beginning of the year to introduce ourselves to the teacher. But of course, to avoid any inappropriate answers, a few requirements were put in place. The biggest requirement was that our poems had to have three out of four of the following; one simple sentence, one compound sentence, one complex sentence, or one compound-complex sentence. Although it was not complicated, I did not take this project seriously at all, making up silly sentences that make no sense. Saying things like; “I want some good hippo” and other things.
Both in my first and second draft you can find examples of things like this. In my second I only made minor changes from saying things like “I am tall and straight.” To “I am tall like a rock.” So the seriousness of the poem never changed between those two drafts. I wanted to believe that I wasn’t being serious because I found the project ‘stupid’, but as I wrote my final draft, I soon learned that wasn’t the case. I decided that I was going to seriously try to write about myself. As I wrote, I started opening fresh wounds I wasn’t even aware that I had.
Many of the content I had incorporated into the poem was personal thoughts I had about myself that I had been using immaturity to cover up. Some topics had been so extremely sensitive it had legitimately brought me to tears. Although I will not show the full final draft, I will include a phrase that had been in it; “I pretend to be normal like everyone else.” Along with many other inner thoughts I’d... But writing that really helped me realize that no, I was not okay, and I didn’t need to use childish behavior to hide that. But rather, learn from the experience, and get the help I need, without making a joke out of the situation. Recovery and self-development takes time and patience, and I am growing and learning, but I hope in the near future I will be a much more mature person and I was at the beginning...
At the Dayton Regional STEM School, we had a project last year called Job Shadow. In this project, we had to find someone local in the community and follow him or her for four hours at work. Last year I job shadowed an employee at Kodak printing industries, who managed the giant printers. During the four hours I was there, I realized that I did not want to build or manage machines as a career. I had always thought I had wanted to work with machines, but because of the Job Shadow, I realized it wasn’t something I wanted to do and now I was unsure about what career... Thankfully, another thing we do at DRSS is STEMmersion.
During STEMmersion, which takes place during the last two weeks of school, we choose a course of study we’re interested in in place of our normal class schedule. Last year for my STEMmersion I chose to do a course where we created the school in Unreal. This course was so fun I decided I wanted to do more with Unreal and signed up for an afterschool class called, Video Game Design this year. I’ve always enjoyed playing video games, and I thought designing video games would be fun. I’m even taking a class this year and it has made me more interested in a career in Video Game Development. Looking back, I realize that my video game design interest started way back in eighth grade when we learned to code.
That year, I did a genius hour over coding in Scratch. I enjoyed coding and making a game but as soon as genius hour was over, I didn’t touch coding until our 10th grade teacher told us we had to make a game in Scratch. I was able to take a lot of the knowledge from my eighth grade genius hour and add it to my new game, but I wanted to do more. In my old game, all you did was jump around, but I wanted to be able to add a story. It took me a lot longer, but I was able to add a simple story to my game, and I enjoyed doing it. After we finished our games and presented them, we started to learn Visual Basic, a text-coding language.
