In my first MSN course I had the opportunity to reflect on the concept of pain and how the concept of pain was integrated into my nursing practice. I analyzed the concept of pain by researching articles and then reflected on how pain affects my practice.

Researching the concept of pain was an important experience because I was reminded how pain affects patients and how pain is different for every patient. Many nurses easily become skeptic of pain after administering narcotic after narcotic. This research halted my process of becoming that skeptic nurse and I was able to reintegrate and renovate the concept of pain into my practice. Theory, concepts and research provides knowledge to support practice. The concept of pain knowledge will be important as a nurse educator. I have the responsibility to teach students about the concept of pain and minimize the negativeness associated with pain.

In my final MSN course I completed an EBP study resulting in recommendations on how a post-discharge telephone call could impact the future of nursing administration, education and practice. Welcome to my e-portfolio! My name is Kaitlyn Ferdig-Vogt. I graduated from Nebraska Methodist College with my Bachelor's in Nursing in December 2013. My background includes working in the resource pool, filling in staffing needs on medical-surgical oncology, medical-surgical oncology, step-down intensive care unit and the intensive care unit. I also have experience working in the Cardiac Cath Lab.

My teaching experiences include orienting new hires, and being a Student Nurse Instructor for local universities' Dedicated Education Units (DEU). I always knew I wanted to pursue a higher degree, and I have discovered how passionate I am about being an educator through completion of the MSN program. I grew up in Omaha, NE with my parents and twin sister. My family has always been supportive and encouraging of my dreams to become a nurse and pursue my Master's in Nursing. I married my best friend Dallas on August 12, 2016. My husband is also a nurse and currently in school to become a Certified Nurse Anesthetist.

In NRS 519, we completed an assignment that allowed us to go through the process of how we would implement the intervention identified in our PICO(T) question in our EBP project.

This was an eye opening assignment because I realized all the work and time involved in implementing a new EBP intervention. Evidence-based practice provides the best quality care to patients but is challenged by stakeholders embracing change. The steps identified in the implementation include steps to encourage stakeholders to accept and embrace change. In my capstone courses my group developed an PICO(T) question, researching how a post-discharge follow-up phone call could decrease readmission rates. 1. b. Build on clinical expertise focusing on a population of interest. In NRS 546, I was able to observe the care of a patient with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This assignment gave me the opportunity to learn more about this dangerous neurological disorder. I was able to share with my peers the physiology of Guillain-Barre, the medical care and the nursing care. I was able to build on my knowledge of caring for someone with a major neurological disorder.

Another assignment in NRS 546 was completing case studies created by classmates. One particular case study involved care of patient with cardiac complications. I enjoyed this case study as my background involves caring for cardiac patients. This case study allowed me to build on my clinical expertise and understand more in-depth information with cardiac complications. This understanding can be utilized in both my clinical care and in my role as a nurse educator. 1.

In NRS 523, we were asked to discuss ethical issues related to curriculum development. I discussed the ethical issue of copyright infringement and how educators need to be aware of copyright laws. As a role model for students I know that I need to have the same ethical expectations for myself and for my students.

If I am breaking copyright laws that would reflect poorly on myself. Students would question why they have to uphold ethical standards when their nurse educator fails to do the same. Other ethical issues include academic integrity and plagiarism which are crucial to maintain in the classroom and clinical setting. In NRS 519, we were asked to discuss ethical decision making related to our evidence based-practice projects. The ethical decision I discussed was whether or not to initiate intravenous fluids and enteral nutrition in post-stroke patients. I discussed how this ethical decision relates to the ethical principle of autonomy.

As a nurse educator I will educate my students about patient autonomy and how to encourage and advocate for patient autonomy. In clinicals and the classroom I can lead discussions with students about autonomy; the stakeholders involved, and both sides of ethical dilemmas regarding autonomy. Ethical issues need addressed in the classroom and clinical setting and as a nurse educator I know how to competently address those issues. Thank you for your interest in me. I have worked in the hospital setting for 12 years and nursing informatics for 2 years. My nursing experience includes acute care, and peri-operative nursing (PACU).

I have experience in working as the Nursing Clinical Consultant for Surgical Services Information Systems within Intermountain Healthcare. I have worked as a nursing educator for 7 years within the same-day/ PACU, Operating Room, and Central Processing. I graduated from the MSN program at Weber State University and am excited to continue my career in nursing education.​ Education has often been referred to as an art form; there are those that can teach, and those that can teach effectively. Effective educators need to possess qualities and characteristics that cultivate students’ learning potential. These qualities and characteristics include being caring, competent, confident, humble, fair, agile, and educated.

These qualities and characteristics are much like the various colors of paint on a palette used to create artistic masterpieces; all will be used in the artistic process depending on the masterpiece to be... Just as educating is an art, nursing is also an art form. The conjunction of the two art forms allows for the academic nurse educator (ANE) better educate to the needs of the class/students, and reach the students on an individual and humanistic level. Just as there are multiple characteristics and qualities an effective educator must possess, it is also important for the ANE to know and understand multiple learning and teaching styles. This will bring a more dynamic approach to the teaching experience, and offer an enhanced learning experience for students. Individuals are on a continual path of learning and growing, on this path our learning styles and learning preferences change over time (Utley, 2011). As learning styles change, so must the teaching styles to better teach and diversify the teaching strategies to better meet the needs of the students. As an educator I must keep up-to-date with the new information and best practices of what I teach, leading to my own self-discovery to become a more effective teacher. I want to instill the eagerness and passion I have to teach and learn in the students and nurses I have the opportunity to teach. As I educate, whether it be in the classroom or as a unit educator, I will strive to be a mentor where I encourage active learning, and encourage my own and the student’s self-discovery.

I understand that nursing is a field where to stay on the cutting-edge and utilize critical thinking skills one must be a life-long learner, this is something I will impart to the students/learners I... As a nurse educator, I have found that it is not a one-size-fits-all approach with education; therefore the teaching strategies I use will need to be adaptable to instruct and mentor on an individual... To be effective I will embrace and utilize multiple teaching styles to better serve the needs of the students. As a unit nurse educator, I hope I create an environment of caring and flexibility while maintaining the humanism aspect to nurture the new and experienced nurses I mentor. As an educator I understand that it is important to the learning process to learn in a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere; I along with the students and colleagues I teach with will create an environment... I will provide prompt and constructive feedback, I feel providing feedback to learners assists with the development of critical thinking, while also demonstrating and cultivating their own communication skills both professionally and socially.

As I provide feedback I hope to relay the positive as well as constructive feedback in an empathetic manner. Long term I plan to grow along the learning continuum, I will learn and demonstrate the evidence based practices of nursing and share and educate to them with the students and nurses I teach. 3. In NRS 508, I was able to discuss how the current state of health care in the United States is constantly changing. The nursing community is an excellent community of people to step up as leaders in this uncertain time. As a future nurse educator I know that I can help formulate strategies that respond to policy changes. Health care is experiencing a nursing shortage due to the aging population. I also discussed the nursing shortage in NRS 509. Both of these discussions address the nursing shortage and how nurse educators can act as change agents.
