Food insecurity is a real challenge for many neighbors in McElderry Park and the surrounding communities. Access to full-service supermarkets and healthy food that is affordable can be difficult and many neighbors are vulnerable due to a lack of steady income or safe places to live. Bread for the Journey is one way we respond to these challenges, both increasing access and building community as we fellowship together. With the support of partners including Maryland Food Bank, Common Market, Share Baby, Kneads & more neighbors shop for free food, diapers, personal & household items at the neighbor-choice pantry every Thursday at 10am. We also share bounty from the garden. Doors open at 9:30am for sign in to begin and the last name is taken at 11:30am.

Neighbors are called in the order they arrive. Please bring a bag if you have one. We break bread together at the Tuesday Community Meal at 12pm. Come fill your belly & feed your soul with the fellowship and support of neighbors. We use regular dishes so bring a container if you need to take it to go. Seconds are served at 1pm and we are always cleaning up by 1:30pm to accomodate afternoon programming needs.

We sometimes also learn to prepare budget-friendly healthy food through cooking classes together. All of this work is designed to bring food security to families and create opportunities for deeper connections. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve and look forward to being able to sit down and break bread together with you and your family!
