The 4th Grade classes decided to explore the ecosystems and animals present around the Hudson River in coordination with their unit on New York State. For their first lesson, all the 4th graders gathered together to first talk about the Hudson River. Groups of students were each given a bag representing one of the environments present along the Hudson River, inside of which held clues to different animals, plants and towns that were found in this... Students were then given time to use physical and online resources to solve their clues and locate their town and practiced their public speaking skills to the rest of the class. In following visits, fourth graders learned about adaptations in relation to these environments. Based on their observations, each fourth grader designed their own imaginary animal that has developed adaptations that help it live near the Hudson River.
This creature is called hard shell scytie (HSS) and it has adapted to a river environment. This creature has a super hard shell and fast movement, which helps it catch fish faster and stay safe from prey. This creature is called the windy wanger and it has adapted to a forest environment. This creature has gills and horns and also a tail shaped like an anchor. The gills help it swim, the horns are for protection, but the tail gets swinged around and digs into another animal. My name is Johanna Isome. I am so excited to teach fourth grade this year. There are so many things to explore and learn in the fourth grade curriculum, I can’t hardly wait to get started!
I have taught pre-K for 17 years, Kindergarten for 2 years, and third grade for 5 years. I have 3 wonderful children, two dogs, and my very patient and loving husband of 30 years. I received Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education K-6, a Master's Degree in Curriculum Design and implementation, I also have an ESL endorsement, Gifted endorsement, and currently working on my Technology endorsement. 2016-17 is going to be an awesome year! Click through the slide show to see what the 4th grade students have been working on! They cover an array of topics and use multiple mediums to create art.
