There was a single focus during design to create the home from the inside out with varied and thoughtul experiences. We all wanted the house to not grow boring. Almost equally important, the owners did not want the house to embody an elitism too often associated with modern and contemporary architecture. Instead of focusing on developing a simple great room with an axial sequencing of activities (living, dining, kitchen), we fragmented the program and parralelled this with shifts in floor plane. Multiple scales, perspectives, and experiences were created all under a single roof, but the subtleties in the moves kept the great room intact. The house hinges around the kitchen and the greater volumes still feels wholistic from each perspective.

All of the private and outdoor rooms extend from the main room in much the same way. This approach allowed us to creat microclimates which included a sunken hardscaped court for outdoor winter activities, an exposed stone covered patio for warm spring breezes, and a landscaped terrace under dense tree canopy... Each bedroom and service space had a unique location and identity with a different scale and feel. All under the same architectural language and cohesive in form and language. It's a project I'm endlessly proud to have been a part of. It was my first major commision on my own and I will forever be greatful to the owner's for their faith in me and their friendship.

At the desire of the homeowner's request to live in a truly "western home" ,we embraced a sympathetic process in developing an emblematic homestead. The compound sets down into the bluff, utilizing the subtle east west drop of the site, sagebrush, and the buildings to create a protective courtyard while also capturing distant south - north vistas. The salvaged stone barn garage & guest quarters , the log cabin master suite, and the timber frame great room all surround an auto court while experiencing the landscape in different ways. Interior spaces capturing unique aspects of the sun rises, sunsets, and vistas. The Architecture of each building resembling vernacular building assemblies typical in the area.

We utilized simple iconic gable forms, which are easily identifiable to the students, to bring comfort and ownership of place to the children as they transition from their homes for the first time. By basing the buildings forms and overall rhythm upon the abstracted existing streetscape, the school was easily able to calm neighbor's concerns about the impact of the large facility and receive conditional use status... The cloister was the ideal form to create a protective and nurturing environment. We reinforced the security of the building by maintaining predominantly closed walls at the Streetscape, locating small windows for children low and high windows for ambient light. Large expanses of glass on the courtyard facing walls connect the classrooms to the covered walkway which operates as an auxiliary teaching space. Teachers can take advantage of moderate spring, fall, and winter temperatures to teach art, music, and have lunch while assisting in monitoring playtime on the grounds all without distractions from the streets or concerns...
