Together, they are the greatest threat we have faced in many generations.
Some, but not all, of these threats are: We, the news media, have much to be afraid of and little to look forward to, or up to. As I say in my many pitches to media colleagues it is very difficult to feel positive when you are staring down the barrel of a gun -financial, real, or both — a reality... For the overwhelming majority of media leaders around the world, a successful year will be the one in which we don’t need to retrench journalists, shrink our operations or downsize our ambitions and the... It’s a tough ask to feel hopeful when we are generally mistrusted by large swathes of humanity, and often hated. In most countries, the profession whose job is to report truth is today gasping for the air of trust and belief.

World News Day is co-organised by WAN-IFRA’s World Editors Forum and the Canadian Journalism Foundation, with this year’s campaign theme “Choose Truth” developed by Project Kontinuum – a campaign incubator led by Daily Maverick...
“World News Day offers a moment to reflect on the vital role that independent and courageous journalists play in communities worldwide. Their work provides the evidence that leads to truth,” said David Walmsley, Editor-in-Chief of The Globe and Mail and founder of World News Day. 2024 A.D. is testing our modern societies in ways we once hoped would never be repeated. Autocratic regimes and aspiring dictators around the world have thrown down a gauntlet to freedoms across borders, races and religions. Modern conflicts span the entire globe and are fought in an information expanse that is overwhelming in its reach and power.
New technologies, and the platforms they enable, are battlefields on which our future is being decided – often without our permission and against our will. In this maelstrom, it is journalism – fact-based, evidence-based, credible news media – that has a lifelong duty to defend the self-evident values our civilisation was built on. Worldwide, it is the journalists who live their responsibility to honour this sacred bond with our audiences and our communities. In return, we feel the joy of shared truth – with you. These special moments – when news stories save lives, improve understanding among people and guide us through rough times – are often lost in the avalanche of disinformation; destroying trust, the bedrock of our... Project Kontinuum is building a powerful, global network to secure the future of news media.
We’re leading the fightback against growing autocracy, weaponised ignorance and organised disinformation. We’re bringing together the remaining genuine news media players to tackle the defining issues of our times. Our mission: a powerful media network for strategic, global action. A decades-long media literacy effort. Choose Truth is our opening shot campaign. We partnered with more than 800 publishing houses in over 100 countries.
Giants like The New York Times and Reuters supported it. And we’re just getting started. Our no-algorithm social media platform, where safety comes first. The News Social will give primary posting rights to verified accounts. It will be controlled by a non-profit, with no incentive to prioritise anything but real news and real human debate. A redefining moment in the fight against a deepening climate crisis.
Eve of Destruction is a push to regain momentum and instil a renewed sense of urgency. What will start as an event, will continue as constant pressure to achieve real change.
