On September 20, 2024, the United Nations Headquarters in New York hosted Action Day 1 of the Summit of the Future, which kicked off with a dedicated, youth-led afternoon, convened by the United Nations... The day’s theme was “#YouthLead for the Future: We believe in the promise of a better world for all”. The day featured a series of engaging discussions, starting with an inspiring opening ceremony led by global leaders and youth advocates including the high-level dialogue with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Creativity took center stage. In a world facing unprecedented challenges, creativity has emerged as a powerful tool for transformation.
Art, in all its forms, allows us to reimagine our reality, giving voice to the unheard and fostering a deeper connection to our shared humanity. Creativity is not just a means of expression — it is a vital instrument for advocacy, action, and hope. Whether through visual art, music, or digital media, youth are harnessing the power of creativity to address global challenges and demand a more just, equitable, and sustainable future. From the unveiling of the HOPE IN ACTION art exhibition to the live visual scribe capturing real-time High-Level Dialogue with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, the Youth Action Day showcased the profound impact... This fusion of creativity and action served as a powerful reminder that youth are not just imagining a better world — they are actively creating it. At the heart of the Opening Ceremony of the Youth Action Day was the unveiling of the HOPE IN ACTION art exhibition, curated by the UN SDG Action Campaign and HUG, with support from...
This exhibition was a powerful testament to the ability of art to inspire hope and action. Featuring 25 selected pieces from over 1,500 global submissions, each artwork told a unique story of hope, resilience, and a call to act now for our shared future. The HOPE IN ACTION exhibition harnesses the power of diverse creative mediums — performance art, digital art, photography, embroidery, and sculpture — to capture the hopes, dreams, and demands of people worldwide. The artwork addresses six thematic priorities: climate action, gender equality, peace, food security, youth empowerment, and digital transformation. These thematic focuses reflect the urgent issues facing our world today, and the creativity expressed through these pieces serves as both an inspiration and a call to action. The exhibition that will be featured globally, including key UN high-level conferences and the UN SDG Action Awards Ceremony in Rome, invites everyone to ACT NOW and help shape a peaceful, just, and inclusive...
Pan-African Solutions Consulting team, Chevelle Dixon and Chawezi Thorne, attended the 79th United Nations General Assembly’s Summit of The Future: Action Days on Friday, September 20th and Saturday, September 21st. The 9th UN Secretary General António Guterres convened the Summit to forge a new international consensus amongst representatives from UN member states, civil society, private sector, academia, local and regional authorities, and youth, on... Action Day 1 commenced in the General Assembly Hall with an Opening Ceremony address from UN Secretary General Guterres and youth leaders from around the world, which set the tone for a commitment to... Day 2 panels resonated strongly with Pan-African Solutions Consulting mission to forge transformative partnerships that uplift marginalized communities, fostering sustainable innovation, human capital, inclusivity, and equity. The Summit’s youth and future generations focal themes included: Sustainable development and financing for development; International peace and security; and Science, technology and digital cooperation. Chevelle is deeply inspired by the Action Day 2 Sustainable track’s focus on multi-stakeholder partnerships for financing sustainable development.
As a continuation from discussions between the Summit of the Future and Black Diaspora small island nations cross cooperation, led by Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in elevating human capital and social outcomes towards a sustainable future for our youth and future generations. Africa and small island nations will continue to bear the brunt of climate change. A sole reliance on philanthropic aid will not cover the financial gaps caused by natural disasters. The discussions on moving from words of the Pact to action included also financing this sustainable development, making it accessible and inclusive to local populations, and to rethinking the credit system in African and... The role of African leadership was made clear by Ms.
Chimi Neliaku of Nigeria who acknowledged that by 2050 a quarter of the world's people will be African or of African descent. By then, the Black Diaspora will not just be focused on solving Africa’s problems, but the world’s problems. This year’s High-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) was centered around the Summit of the Future. The aim of the segment was to renew multilateralism and modernize the United Nations system to address the key global challenges, including sustainable development, finance for development, peace and security, youth empowerment and digital... Leaders worked toward a more sustainable, equitable future by adopting the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration for Future Generations. Ahead of the official kickoff of the summit, an APCO delegation participated in the Summit of the Future Action Days, which took place on September 20 and 21 at the UN Headquarters, as well...
The two action-packed days were filled with interesting dialogues on relevant topics such as artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, environmental sustainability, gender equality and human rights, just to name a few. However, four things stood out to our team as conversations that should and will expand beyond this monumental time at the UN. Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson quoted Martin Luther King Jr. multiple times to emphasize “the fierce urgency of now.” From government leaders to youth delegates, all participants agreed on the necessity of immediate action to address global issues. There is little time to wait. However, the struggles to reach agreement on certain sections of the Pact of the Future, particularly in areas like global governance reform, highlight the challenges in securing bold, transformative changes.
While ambitious changes are essential for progress, they are hard to achieve quickly. A solution to this is incremental change, which raised critical questions about identifying immediate opportunities for gradual improvement that align with our long-term objectives. In September, Aisha Hussein Roba – a youth grantee from Isiolo, Kenya alongside Orchid Project Policy & Advocacy Manager, Brenda Dora attended the Summit of the Future on the sidelines of the 79th session... This was part the Girl Generation: Support to the Africa-led Movement to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) delegation led by Orchid Project. UNGA is aways a pivotal moment where world leaders gather annually in New York at the UN Headquarters. However, this year’s UNGA stood out for its unanimous adoption of the Pact of the Future.
The Pact of the Future resulted from a broad process, spanning several years, and is the most comprehensive international agreement in many years. The Pact addresses new issues and some long-standing areas of contention where progress has been slow for decades. Its primary goal is to ensure that global institutions can rise to the demands of a world that has changed significantly since its inception. This was captured by the UN Secretary-General, noting, “We cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents.” The Pact addresses many critical global issues, including peace and security, sustainable development, digital cooperation, and youth engagement. Notably, the inclusion of women and girls is far more prominent in the adopted version compared to earlier drafts, which lacked a strong focus on gender equality.
However, many believe gender equality should have featured much stronger in the Pact. The inclusion of female genital mutilation as a form of violence in the adopted Pact is a victory. In the work that Orchid Project has been leading on behalf of TGG: Support to ALM Programme Orchid Project works with young people as agents of change in the end FGM/C movement. The programme has been championing strategic inclusion of young people with the realization that as the world becomes more interconnected, global challenges like climate change, gender-based violence, poverty, and inequality cannot be solved without... One of the key breakthroughs within the Pact was the first-ever Declaration on Future Generations. This declaration outlines specific measures to ensure that future generations are considered in today’s decision-making processes.
Alongside the appointment of Dr. Felipe Paullier, the UN Assistant Secretary-General on Youth a year ago, this heralds a new era of youth involvement in global governance. The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly marks a crucial milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The highly anticipated Summit of the Future, held during UNGA, underscores the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation to address pressing challenges such as climate change, poverty and inequality, while also tackling the impacts... Heads of State and Government will gather at UN Headquarters in New York on 22-23 September 2024 to address the critical challenges and gaps in global governance exposed by recent global shocks. This Summit aims to reaffirm commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Charter while enhancing cooperation and laying the foundations for a reinvigorated multilateral system.
The Summit will result in a negotiated Pact for the Future, an action-oriented document aimed to bolster global cooperation and adapt to current challenges effectively for the benefit of all and for future generations. In addition, the Secretary-General of the United Nations is convening the Summit of the Future Action Days on 20 and 21 September 2024 to generate additional opportunities for the engagement of all actors. The UN Department of Global Communications will hold its flagship SDG Media Zone during the high-level week 23-27 September, with impactful in-depth interviews and dialogues on global issues that matter to people everywhere. World leaders will gather to engage in the annual high-level General Debate under the theme, “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and... Heads of State and Government and ministers will explore solutions to intertwined global challenges to advance peace, security, and sustainable development. The High-level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) presents an opportunity for countries and stakeholders to renew efforts and accelerate progress in combating the growing threat of AMR.
This meeting will serve as the foundation for executing policies and ensuring accountability for strengthening health systems against AMR. Building on the momentum of previous declarations and commitments, participants will focus on enhancing international cooperation, promoting the responsible use of antimicrobials, and advancing the development of new treatments to safeguard global health.
