Caitlyn is on a mission to see and try everything. She finds herself constantly drawn to places, people, and the natural world. She is passionate about building community, urbanism, event planning, and making things look nice. She is trying out expat life in Berlin. She spends her free time playing roller derby with Bear City Roller Derby and all her free income on plane tickets. Community, Environment, and Planning (CEP) is an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree housed in the Department of Urban Design and Planning.

Unlike most majors, CEP does not provide a pre-defined educational path. Instead, CEP empowers students to draw on the tools of planning – practice, personal formation, intentionality, communal learning, and stewardship – to pursue their own educational goals. The CEP core curriculum focuses on theory and practice applied to real-world settings; electives are satisfied by taking courses anywhere on campus. In our major, we develop skills, techniques, and knowledge necessary to be active leaders and conscientious planners in our communities and environments. Temporary use of space in urbanism can be roughly described as the reallocation of unused or underutilized space, which can act as a catalyst to enliven and rehabilitate cities and neighborhoods. Once a bottom-up, do-it-yourself strategy for the creative reappropriation of urban space, temporary use projects are increasingly integrated into many modern top-down urban planning and design initiatives.

This capstone project has developed into its final form from initial research conducted on my study abroad program in Berlin, a city ripe with a vast history of temporary space, creative-use projects. Berlin has the policy backing, real estate availability, and, perhaps most importantly, the culture that supports and encourages interim use projects --But would replication of such a project in my home city of Seattle... Using research on temporary use spaces, event production, and global case-study comparisons, I created my own temporary use project: a one-day ArtWalk event in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood that temporarily activates a place and provides... The results of my work are summarized in a written report that describes my research findings, production methodology, and the results of a comparative analysis of the policy, real estate, and cultural differences between... We explored the city of Berlin as a prism for German history, unification, and European integration, but also as a site of political rupture and social conflict to trace the social, cultural, political, and... The studies explored spatial concepts of the city including mass displacement during the Holocaust, the spatial and social implications of migration and the modern refugee crisis on the city, and the planning implications of... We also looked towards architectural and design techniques to historically enact imagined political identities, as well as architecture and design as a means of memorialization. Based out of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the program used traditional lecture methods as well as urban explorations to memorial sites, meetings with public officials, social activists, artists, and journalists to inform these issues.

Field trips to Munich and Prague helped to narrate these concepts. Focused on the history and politics involved in the city's architectural and design choices, with emphasis to topics of centralization/decentralization of the city's landmarks and memorial culture.
