It is the most important part of your PC and the start of your building process. To start off you need to know about two words: Multi-Core and Hyper-Threading.

Each CPU has a different number of cores, think batteries that power your computer. First you have to ask yourself if you are a power user or a casual user. If you want to squeeze very last bit of performance out of your CPU you will want to have an unlocked cpu, with Intel, these are the processors that end in a K. Keep in mind that this will take some research and possible BIOS resets. So you decide if you want to overclock or not. Then you have to ask yourself: are you a gamer or a you a professional that needs a powerful computer?

The second step is to find the best basic specifications for your task. A gaming computer needs a powerful graphics card, but it also needs CPU capable of matching that graphics card to prevent bottlenecking. But in a workstation, the CPU tends to be the most important. The third step is RAM. RAM choice is simple. In a workstation, the quantity of RAM is important, and as such, our workstations are equipped with 16 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM at minimum, going up to 128Gb and beyond. With an Intel CPU, RAM speed isn’t super important, and thus can save the consumer some money, however with the better performance per dollar AMD CPUs, RAM speed is critical. For AMD systems, we only use 3000MHz RAM or higher. Despite the increased price of RAM, our AMD systems provide the best performance per dollar, while our Intel gaming systems are designed with pure speed in mind.

After the CPU, RAM, and GPU are chosen, the case is an important choice, as it dictates what motherboard, cpu cooler and to some extent, what storage options are available. The case also is what is most visible, and is the easiest to have look like what the customer wants. But at the same time, a case can suck up a huge amount of money. And so the case is chosen early to have the rest of the design fall in with the budget easier. Once the case is chosen, I move on to the motherboard. My choices are limited by the CPU and case, I always choose the a high quality motherboard from brands like Asus, MSI, ASRock or EVGA.

This is due to the fact that I have had boards with cheaper components (like capacitors) fail on me under extreme workloads. They can also overclock higher and with more stability.
