I love going through the creative process. Starting with an idea, growing it, watching it come to life. Sometimes it turns out exactly how you envisioned it and sometimes it evolves into something else entirely. There will be that moment when planning out a project and a concept will come to you and, though you may continue exploring more ideas it, is the one you keep going back to,... I want to continue exploring and expanding my skills. There is always more to learn and room to improve.

Sarah is a Graphic designer currently enrolled at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in the Graphic Design program. Born and raised in eastern Ontario she moved to Fredericton New Brunswick with her husband and their two children. Having always had a love of crafts and art, she enrolled in the Foundation Visual Arts program at NBCCD where she had a strong pull toward Graphic Design. Graphic design is a very large industry that branches out into many different fields. My ultimate job would be an illustrator working on children’s books as well as book covers in general. Possible jobs include working for a publishing company or freelancing, though I think I would prefer the latter.

I love Illustrating and I love reading, it would be a combination of my favourite things. I also love reading books to my children who always ask for “just one more.” Graphic design, like most fields, is a continuous learning experience no matter how long someone has been doing it. There is more involved in Graphic design that most people would think. I have learned that there is more than one solution to a problem. When given an assignment in class each student could convey the same information with completely different designs. I look forward to continuing my education and developing my own personal style as I build my portfolio.

I find a lot of it depends on time management. I try to plan what I will do when and how much time to give myself for each task making sure I leave time to spend with my family. I try to get ahead on my work to have that extra time if something comes up. Unfortunately, this can leave little time for relaxing and having ‘you time’.

However, I feel that it’s important to take time for yourself when you can. You also need to know when to ask for help. You can ask for help from your partner either with the kids or household chores, or from instructors or fellow students if you are struggling with schoolwork.
