About The Alliance
We help self-funded employers control costs and uncover serious savings while unlocking improved access to high-value care for employees and their families. The Alliance has partnered with Aspirus Health, Aurora Health Care, and Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital to offer broader in-network care options. We help self-funded employers design custom provider networks – what we call our Smarter Networks℠ – to save them money by partnering with doctors and healthcare providers across the Midwest. And because we’re never satisfied in our pursuit of improving access to High-Value Healthcare, we’re continuing to expand our provider networks to offer employers even more choice, control, and cost-savings. Is self-funding right for you? Under a self-funded or self-insured health plan, employers fund the plan rather than paying a premium to a commercial insurer.
This means taking on the responsibility - as well as the risks and rewards of paying the medical and prescription drug claims of employees and their families. For many employers, self-funding can be a better alternative to the traditional fully insured approach, driving greater transparency, control, and cost savings. When you choose to self-fund with The Alliance, you get better care at a better price for your employees and your business. We find savings where others can’t – or won’t – using deep data mining and analytics to unlock opportunities like employee guidance. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded... And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
The Christian and Missionary Alliance, otherwise known as the C&MA or The Alliance, is an evangelical denomination full of believers who long to introduce the love of God to all nations. The Alliance was birthed in 1881 when Pastor A. B. Simpson organized a small group of believers devoted to experiencing Jesus in His fullness and making Him known to New York City’s marginalized dock workers. The Alliance has always had a desire to follow God’s call, to bring His hope to the nations, and to carry out our vision of All of Jesus for All the World. By caring for suffering and overlooked people through 2,000 U.S.
churches and more than 700 international workers serving in 70 countries, the C&MA longs to see Jesus’ name proclaimed in every tribe and tongue to fulfill the Great Commission. That’s our mission—to go and make disciples of all nations, to bring all of Jesus to all of the world. The Alliance is a global church with a passion to invite people to follow Jesus. Around the world, The Alliance establishes new churches, schools, clinics, hospitals, community centers, and radio stations, and engages in other strategic initiatives. Today there are tens of millions of people worshipping in Alliance churches around the world. The Alliance U.S.
consists of more than 2,000 churches. Together, we continue to start new churches across the nation and around the world with the driving value to reach the whole person with the whole gospel — it’s the call God has on... The Alliance global staff currently serve in nearly 70 countries planting churches; training national leaders; providing relief and development assistance; delivering medical and dental care; and embracing micro-enterprise projects. The Alliance began in the late 1800s when God spoke to the heart of A.B. Simpson, a Presbyterian pastor, upon seeing floods of immigrants pour into New York City; far from God and largely ignored by the established church. Simpson left his church to start the New York Gospel Tabernacle to welcome the poor, the homeless, the sick, and the displaced across the neighborhoods of New York.
His ministry to immigrants ultimately led to a grander vision from God to reach the unreached masses of people around the world. With this vision, Simpson courageously began to assemble like-minded people with a passion for taking the whole gospel to the whole world. He introduced evangelistic meetings on Sunday afternoons which over time grew into camp meetings and revivals up and down the East Coast. This was the beginning of The Alliance. We serve as the voice of self-funded employers who want more control over their healthcare costs, and who believe that affordable, high-quality care should be accessible to everyone. We’ve been impacting healthcare for over 35 years by providing transparent, creative approaches to network and benefit plan design. We lower costs for our clients by helping them achieve High-Value Healthcare for their employees.
Cooperatives are organizations owned and run by their members to benefit their members. For The Alliance, this means helping our employers secure High-Value Healthcare – better care at a better price – for their employees and their families. Cooperatives also produce shared profits. When The Alliance makes a profit, we return a portion back to each employer-member based on their level of participation. This is what we call our Cooperative Shareholder Benefit, or patronage dividend, paid to employers annually. Our employers also can serve on our Board of Directors (or vote to elect them).
Another invaluable benefit of joining a cooperative is the opportunity to share ideas and concerns with other like-minded employers, brokers, and group purchasers. Employer-members of The Alliance are drivers of healthcare innovation and improvement, paving the path toward High-Value Healthcare for all. In 1990, healthcare premiums were increasing by an average of 14 percent nationwide annually. Self-funded employers were hit even harder. So, a small group of employers gathered around a table to find a better way to purchase healthcare for their employees. Seven Madison-area employers formed the Employer Health Care Alliance Cooperative — now known as The Alliance — to negotiate directly with healthcare providers.
These employers chose a cooperative structure to allow participating employers to share the responsibility and benefits of membership. While The Alliance began in the Madison area, it quickly gained employer-members in Southern Wisconsin, and across the state. The cooperative’s provider network grew organically where employer-members’ employees live and seek care. Today, The Alliance network covers most of the state of Wisconsin, with additional coverage in Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. By 2010, 20 years after its creation, the cooperative had over 160 employer-members; By its 25th anniversary, The Alliance covered over 100,000 lives; and the cooperative continues to grow year-over-year. As of 2025, The Alliance represents over 500 employers and covers 123,000 lives.
The Alliance provider networks include over 36,000 medical practitioners, 9,300 clinics, and 150 hospitals. Since its creation, The Alliance has been committed to the following three objectives:
