We advocate and lobby for quality education for all adults, and raise awareness of the impact of adult learning on people’s lives and on society A world where the pursuit of learning for all adults is valued, equal, and strengthens communities Be part of this landmark event bringing together communities, learners, educators, policymakers, and key stakeholders from Ireland, the UK, and across Europe. To advocate for empowering adult learning that drives social equality, justice, and collective action across the island of Ireland We recently held our 55th AGM. The theme for this year’s AGM was ‘Connecting Communities’ and featured some thought-provoking discussions with learners and those who work within the sector.
Adult learning is about giving people a fair and supportive chance to learn at any stage in life. It’s about creating spaces where everyone feels included, respected, and encouraged to grow—no matter their background or experience. It focuses on real-life learning that’s useful, empowering, and built around the learner’s own goals and interests. AONTAS values community, equality, and giving learners a voice, so adult learning isn’t just about gaining knowledge—it’s also about building confidence, making connections, and creating positive change in people’s lives and communities. It can be hard to know where to start, but you have come to the right place! Click on our below learner stories to read about others experiences with adult and community education.
“I wanted to put myself out there to improve my confidence and independence” “In school I was told I would never get anywhere because I couldn’t spell, couldn’t write a letter. My self-confidence was wiped out, something that lasts until this day” “I have achieved something that I thought I would never achieve” AONTAS - The Irish National Adult Learning Organisation is an Irish non-governmental organisation for the promotion and facilitation of adult learning. It was founded in 1969 by Fr.
Liam Carey of the Dublin Institute of Adult Education (and originally based in the same premises), and launched by Brian Lenihan TD. Sean O'Murchu was elected its first president. In 1970 they affiliated to the European Bureay of Adult Education. In 1974 Aontas received funding from P.J. Carroll Ltd., allowing it to employ a full time director, funding a move in premises, and funding a research bursary. While it has been a non-governmental body, since 1976, it receives funding from the Department of Education and Skills.[2]

Over the past two years, AONTAS has been delivering Learner Voice training for ETB staff, and they shared how valuable it has been to hear what others in different ETBs are doing. Staff requested to hear from those who have successfully established Learner Voice groups. 57 staff attended the webinar to learn more about developing or enhancing Learner Voice structures within their organisation and to hear from Ciarán Kennedy, Lorraine Downey and Joanne Nelligan. We also heard from adult learners, Hayleigh Keogh and Felix Owusu Asante, and shared their experiences and advice with staff on supporting Learner Voice.
