Applied Language Technology Mooc
This repository contains learning materials for the Applied Language Technology MOOC as interactive Jupyter Notebooks. This website hosts the learning materials for a massive open online course (MOOC) created by the University of Helsinki. The MOOC is intended to provide an introduction to applied language technology for audiences who are unfamiliar with language technology and programming. This website hosts the learning materials for a massive open online course (MOOC), which consists of two courses taught at the University of Helsinki: Working with Text in Python and Natural Language Processing for... The MOOC is intended to provide an introduction to applied language technology for audiences who are unfamiliar with language technology and programming. The learning materials assume no previous knowledge of the Python programming language.
The field of language technology (or often interchangeably, natural language processing) studies how computers can process and represent natural language, that is, languages spoken, written or signed in the world. Language technology is now used in many real-world applications, which range from traditional tasks such as filtering e-mails for spam to complex communicative situations, such as providing customer service using chatbots. As a part of this development, language technology has become increasingly accessible in recent years. Popular programming languages such as Python enable users to apply the latest language technology. Newcomers, however, may find programming languages such as Python intimidating. For this reason, this MOOC is intended as a gentle, hands-on introduction to applying language technology using the Python programming language.
The MOOC is designed with newcomers in mind, targeting particularly students of languages, linguistics and communication, in order to empower them by making language technology accessible and understandable. English language teachers around the world learned more about incorporating technology into their classrooms in a massive open online course (MOOC) through the Applied Linguistics program in the Department of English at Iowa State. Volker Hegelheimer, professor of English, and Kimberly Becker, graduate student in English, taught the five-week course this spring with nearly 11,000 participants enrolled from all over the world. The course developed out of a global online course the department has hosted for two years, with several of its alumni serving as facilitators in the MOOC. Additionally, most of the faculty in the English department that are part of the applied linguistics program contributed to the development of the course. “We’re sharing the expertise that we have here collectively in the field of technology and English language teaching,” Hegelheimer said.
“I think that’s really made the course great.” The participants, many of whom have taken MOOCs before, commented on the benefit and uniqueness of having multiple voices and perspectives contribute to the course. (Previously known as DIKI1003-NLP-for-Linguists) The course is based on weekly teaching materials and exercises as well as an exam at the end of the course. The course is a modified version of the MOOC by Tuomo Hiippala (Uni Helsinki). Some instructions may mention the MOOC - nevermind those.
The course consists of the weekly exercises, discussion on the discussion forum, and the exam (also done on CSC Notebooks). To do the exam, you need to have submitted all the weekly exercises. The evaluation is based on the weekly exercises and the exam with extra points from participating actively in the forum discussions. The teaching materials are found at https://applied-language-technology.mooc.fi/html/index.html. Parts I and II belong to the previous course, part III to this one.
