If you don’t have the financial means for a paid subscription but would like one, please send me an email. I’m happy to comp subscriptions to people on tight budgets. Thanks again for being a reader, and here’s to a happy holidays for you and yours. Three years ago today, I launched Public Notice with a piece that took a big picture look at the state of things in those early months of the Biden administration.
As I wrote then, “if 2020 highlighted the grave danger confronting American democracy, 2021 made clear that even after Trump was defeated, that fight is far from over.” Suffice it to say that commentary has aged well, and I’m glad to report that Public Notice has too. The newsletter has grown beyond my wildest dreams — from scratch to over 132,000 subscribers all over the world today. I’m extremely proud of how our work has evolved over the years and am honored that Public Notice was recently named one of this summer’s top Substacks. In the infamous words of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the best is yet to come. I’m grateful to collaborate with a fantastic and growing group of contributors who help me cover everything from legal affairs to media criticism to policy.
I learn so much putting this newsletter together week in and week out and am gratified to regularly hear from readers who rely on our explanatory journalism to help them understand US politics. Leaving Vox to go independent felt like a big gamble back in the fall of 2021, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. So whether you’ve been a founding subscriber from day one or are a free reader who just signed up last week, thank you. The next month will obviously be a momentous one in terms of the direction of the United States, but regardless of the outcome of the election we will continue working hard to make sure... And on that note, I have a special third anniversary offer for the roughly 125,000 free subscribers to the newsletter. If you’ve been wanting to support our work with a paid subscription but have been waiting for a slightly lower price point, now’s the time.
Just click the button below to sign up for an annual full subscription to Public Notice for the special discounted price of $40. On the fourth anniversary of Public Notice’s launch, I’m taking a quick break from our regularly scheduled programming to say thank you. Leaving Vox to go independent was a very difficult decision back in the fall of 2021, but it turned out to be one of the best ones I ever made. PN has grown beyond my wildest dreams and these days I’m blessed to work with an amazingly talented group of contributors. Most of all I’m grateful for you, our readers, because without you this newsletter wouldn’t be possible. One thing that hasn’t changed is that our work is entirely reader funded.
So if you’ve been enjoying PN but aren’t yet a paid subscriber, I’m asking you to help us celebrate our anniversary by signing up to become one. To make it easier for those on tight budgets, I’m offering the special discounted price of 20 percent off for annual subscriptions. Click the button below to get the newsletter right in your inbox every morning for just $40 annually. Paid subscriptions come with a range of perks, including full access to everything we publish, Q&As with me, commenting privileges, and more. But most importantly they keep the newsletter thriving and allow me to make it almost entirely free for everyone. (If you signed up for PN right after we launched four years ago or any October since, thank you, but also please make sure your credit card information is up to date!)
Yes, the subject matter we cover is often heavy, but chronicling American democracy’s struggle to survive the Trumpist onslaught is important work. That’s the big story we’ve been covering without pulling punches since the very first edition of the newsletter, and it’ll remain our focus heading into next year’s crucial midterms and beyond. One year ago this week, I launched Public Notice with a zoom out on “the big picture.” Leaving Vox to go independent wasn’t an easy choice, but I wanted to ensure I could continue... While some outlets were eager to be done with Trump, Trumpism clearly wasn’t done with us. Going solo meant I could tell that story in all of its forms on my own terms, and I was confident I had the audience to have success. Looking back, I’m glad I took the plunge.
From scratch, Public Notice now has over 25,000 subscribers (mash the button below if you’re not one of them). This note is both to thank you for reading and loop everyone in on my plans for year two as an independent journalist unbeholden to newsroom higher ups and advertisers. First, let me touch upon a few highlights from year one. I wrote and published expert Q&As, hard-hitting media analysis, and went deep on right-wing media, MAGA rallies, conservative conferences, the January 6 hearings, and much, much more. My most popular post was an irreverent explainer about Trump’s ridiculous fundraising emails. I shared about my life and the techniques I’ve mastered for video clipping and Twitter threads.
There will be much more of all that, but I also have some new things in store. This summer I started publishing pieces from freelancers covering everything from the perils of “both sides” journalism to the errors of left-wing Putin apologists. This journalism is entirely funded by readers like you, and as the newsletter grows, I plan to expand my stable of contributors with even more smart voices and diverse perspectives. Hit me up (atrupar@gmail.com) if you have pitches. I’m also debuting a new feature called Aaron’s Clip Room. At the end of each newsletter, I’ll embed significant politics and media clips and explain why they’re worth watching.
This feature will paywalled for paid subscribers, so if you’d like access and aren’t yet one, hit the button below. Sign up for independent, incisive coverage of US politics and media, right in your inbox five times a week.
