Democracy thrives on choice. But in this year’s Board of Education election, Clifton voters will be presented with no decisions to make – just three names for three available seats. Clifton’s Board of Education is comprised of nine members who serve staggered three-year terms. Each year, three seats become available. Often, commissioners with expiring seats choose to run again and, like in other elections, those incumbents have a strong advantage at the polls. In November, Mark Brunciak’s, Richie Mejia’s, and Anthony Santiago’s seats will expire.

The third candidate is Alias Ragsdale, a young newcomer who ran a strong campaign in last year’s election but was ultimately unsuccessful in unseating any of the three incumbents. Just four years ago, the race drew a crowded field, with nine candidates vying for three seats. That year, incumbents Judith Bassford and Lucy Danny came out on top, joined by newcomer Alan Paris, who unseated Frank Kasper.

In 2023, there were just four candidates, and last year, five. At the June 19th meeting of the Board of Education, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Janina Kusielewicz presented the Clifton Public School District’s 2025 Strategic Plan. The plan, which looks forward to the next five years, is a roadmap for where the district wants to go. Public input was collected at three separate meetings in early 2025, where educators, parents, Board of Education commissioners, and other interested citizens participated in small group discussions. “The Strategic Plan serves to revise and then create strategies to support and promote our District Mission Statement,” she said. The meetings, facilitated by New Jersey School Boards, developed goals, objectives, and action steps that participants felt would help move the district forward over the next five years.

These district goals will drive the superintendent’s district goals, and cross-departmental committees will meet to ensure that we can implement components of the vision laid out in these goals. Yearly updates will be provided. Five major goal areas were identified from the strategic planning meetings: The main goal under Academic Excellence and Curriculum Development is to “redesign a PK-12 curriculum which balances foundational skills progressing through grades and prepares students for 21st century challenges and opportunities.” The Clifton Board of Education in Passaic County recently earned its Board Certification.
