RIF, a national children’s literacy nonprofit, provided free books to the district’s fourth- and fifth-graders through RIF’s Books for Ownership program. RIF’s Books for Ownership program enables children to select new, age-appropriate books to take home and own and is supported by online resources for parents, educators, and local literacy advocates to create a continuous... More than 960 students at nine elementary schools throughout the district benefited from a $9,528 grant from RIF, in partnership with The Bingham Trust and secured by the Foundation for Portland Public Schools. Schools participating in the program are Cliff Island School, East End Community School, Lyseth Elementary School, Ocean Avenue Elementary School, Peaks Island Elementary School, Presumpscot Elementary School, Reiche Community School, Riverton Elementary School and... By providing children with choice and access to books and literacy resources, the Portland Public Schools hopes to create a culture of literacy in its community while working to give each child an opportunity... In 2006, Book’em joined forces with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the largest children's literacy organization in the United States.
Today, Book’em administers the RIF program in 15 Title I Metro Nashville elementary schools and is working to be able to serve more schools in the future. Each classroom is visited by a volunteer reader five times throughout the school year, during which the reader engages the students through interactive reading. At the end of each visit, students each pick their own book to keep and enjoy at home. Each child ends the school year with five new books in their home library, a relationship with a reading role model, and (we hope!) a re-energized love of books and reading. Locally, the RIF program now serves over 7,000 children a year through a network of more than 250 reading role model volunteers, distributing 31,000+ books annually. RIF is FULL for the 2025-2026 school year, and we cannot thank you enough for your support!

"This program is transformational for students and brings my students such joy!"
Reading is Fundamental/RIF is the largest children's literacy non-profit program in the United States. RIF believes every child deserves an opportunity to own books, learn how to read, and obtain the fundamental building blocks to achieve their highest potential. Literacy opens doors and enables every child the chance to live their own journey. Sister Patricia McKinney Lewis wrote the first project proposal for RIF. The Epsilon Epsilon Omega Chapter received the first grant from the National Reading is Fundamental organization to help fund the RIF program in June 1980. The chapter's total RIF budget for the first year was $400.
The RIF grant provided $300, and the chapter was responsible for $100 to purchase books for the summer project. When she was asked why she sought out the first RIF contract in 1980 and what her vision was for our community, Mrs. Lewis passionately stated, “I remembered as a child the first time I visited a library, I was amazed at the number of good books. The library became a place I loved to visit. I fell in love with reading. Reading became very important to me as a child and a teen.
My vision was that children with few resources would have the opportunity for book ownership and become avid readers. As a young teacher, I knew that the ability to read was the key to learning and understanding other subjects in school. I realized that some children lived in homes with no books. I started the RIF project for the sorority to provide books to children with few resources (low-income homes) during the summer months. Allowing children to select books that they are interested in reading promotes the love for reading.” During the first year, the Chapter committee distributed books at three Champaign Park District summer camps: Centennial, Spalding, and Douglass.
In the second year, permission was granted to change the distribution sites to: Douglass Center Day Camp, Douglass Branch Library, Girls’ Club in Urbana, and Boys’ Club in Champaign. After the Girls' Club closed and the Douglass Branch Library moved, the sites for many years were the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club, Douglass Day Camp, Mount Olive Baptist Church, and St. Luke CME Church. In recent years, book distributions and read-ins in conjunction with National African American Read-In Day have been held at the Laura Lee Fellowship House in Danville, Canaan Baptist Church in Urbana, The Urbana Neighborhood... On February 27, 2015, the Epsilon Epsilon Omega RIF committee distributed books to more than 40 children at the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club in Champaign, Illinois. The books were purchased with a generous $500.00 donation from Macy’s Department Store in Champaign.
During the book distribution, sorority members read to students and talked to them about the importance of reading. The children signed a banner to thank Macy's for their generous donation, and celebrated Epsilon Epsilon Omega’s 35th RIF birthday with cake and punch. Reading Is Fundamental’s (RIF’s) program and content offerings provide books and resources for families, educators, and literacy advocates to create a culture of reading in the classroom and at home. Giving children choice and access to new, age-appropriate books to take home and own is positively tied to reading behaviors including motivation, frequency, and engagement—which lead to enhanced reading and writing performance, language development,... Of children living at or below the poverty line in America have no books at home. In some of the lowest-income neighborhoods, there is just 1 book for every 833 children.
Research demonstrates that the presence of books in the home impacts academic outcomes for children. Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) addresses the critical need for book ownership through our Books for Ownership program and Skybrary digital library.
