University of Wisconsin students, staff, and faculty must present a valid UW ID card in order to check out library materials from the College Library Circulation Desk, Reserve Desk, or the Computer Lab Desk. All other patrons must present a Community Borrowing Card to check material out. Most College Library items follow the standard policies described on the UW-Libraries Borrowing Policies page. The following loan periods differ from those standard policies. Students enrolled in a degree credit class at Madison College may obtain a free borrowing card that allows access to and borrowing privileges at all UW-Madison campus libraries. Fill out the online form to request a UW Community Borrowing Card. After applying, you'll receive an email telling you that your card is ready for pick up and to bring a required letter from a librarian at your home institution. These forms are available at any Madison College library circulation desk. To obtain the borrowing card, present this form and either a State issued ID/drivers license or passport at the Card Application Window at UW-Madison's Memorial Library. For the summer semester, Madison College Truax Library is open 8:00-4:30pm Monday through Friday, and closed on weekends.

Instructors: Place materials on reserve for your class As a membership benefit, PLATO Members are eligible to receive a UW-Madison Library Courtesy Card. The Card offers borrowing privileges at all UW-Madison Libraries. If you are applying for a Library Card after April 1st, you must first renew your PLATO membership for the coming year. This is true even if you have not yet received a PLATO renewal notice. Renew your membership by logging in to your member profile, and following the prompts.

Be sure to select “PLATO” at the FIRST drop down question – Affiliation – on the Form. Proof of your PLATO membership status is provided directly to the Library by the PLATO Office. PLATO is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supported in part by: Use the Library Catalog to find call numbers for materials. When you find the item record for the material, check the status line to make sure the item is not currently checked out. NOTE: All library materials on campus show up in the Library Catalog so the location of the item may not be Memorial Library.

Use our online Stack Guide or guides posted by the elevators to find the floor the item is located. There are maps at the entrance to each stack area showing the location of the call numbers located in that section. If you need help using the library catalog or locating an item, contact Ask a Librarian. In order to borrow materials from Memorial Library you must present a valid Wiscard, a UW System ID or a Library Card. Take the materials you want to the Circulation Desk on the first floor. Staff will loan the materials out to you.

University of Wisconsin students and employees may borrow Library materials in person with a UW System photo ID card. The most versatile library card for Wisconsin residents is the community borrowing card issued by the UW-Madison Libraries. You apply for this card online and it's ready in a few business days. For $50 per year ($25 per year for borrowers age 62+), you can borrow materials from both the UW-Madison Libraries and the Wisconsin Historical Society Library. Wisconsin residents can sign up for a free Society community card at the Society's Library Circulation Desk.

Signing up takes about five minutes and requires presentation of both photo ID and proof of current Wisconsin address (driver's license, state ID, utility bill or lease). Society library cards are only valid for borrowing Society Library materials, expire after one year and must be renewed in person. Many books, bound periodicals, microforms and government publications may be checked out for home use with a library card. Rare, fragile, small (under 50 pages) and heavily used materials (including genealogical resources) do not circulate. Materials with a 28-day loan period may be renewed for up to 12 weeks. UW faculty/staff receive a semester loan on most materials, which can be renewed for up to two years.

External hard drives can be renewed once for 14 days. The Libraries will automatically renew your eligible loans 7 days before the due date. You get an email about an approaching due date if a loan cannot be renewed. You can continue to manage your loans and view their due dates in your Library Account. After manually renewing your loans, be sure to check the status message to see if the item(s) has been renewed. If the item status does not read “renewed,” one of the following may have occurred:

You must find materials before you may borrow them, make use of them in the library, or access them online. Start with the Library Catalog to find materials in UW-Madison or UW System libraries. The Library Catalog also contains links to many online resources. You may also request materials be held for you, or delivered to the campus library of your choice, via the Library Catalog. An email notification will be sent when the materials are ready for pickup.
