The following is a list of ballot measures (also known as referendums, ballot questions, proposals, initiatives, propositions and proposals) which were on the ballot for the 2022 United States elections. Some were held prior to the federal elections on November 8. Many were initiated by state legislatures, while others were initiated by public petitions. In all, there were 141 ballot measures on ballots across most U.S. states and the District of Columbia at any point throughout the year. There were no statewide ballot measures in 2022 for the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The total cost spent on signature drives across the country has dramatically increased despite the number of initiatives continuing to fall MIDDLETON, Wis., Oct. 27, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Ballotpedia has released three new studies on campaign finance, signature gathering costs and readability scores of this year's 140 ballot measures. Contributions to ballot measures campaigns totaled more than $825 million through Oct. 23. That's down from 2020, when contributions for and against 129 ballot issues topped $1.24 billion.
Campaigns for seven issues on the California ballot raised more than $618 million. Campaigns supporting and opposing Proposition 27, which would legalize online and mobile sports betting, account for more than $383 million of the state's total. That amount surpasses last cycle's Proposition 22, which totaled $224 million in contributions, making Proposition 27 the most expensive measure in the state's history. Eleven election-related ballot measures appeared on the ballot in 10 states on Nov. 8, and voters in Louisiana decided on an election-related initiative on Dec. 10. Seven of the measures concerned voting policy, with voters approving measures on issues such as ranked-choice voting, early voting, and voter eligibility.
One state approved a voter ID requirement, while another state rejected a similar requirement. Five measures related to citizen-initiated ballot measure processes. Voters approved three measures requiring single subjects for ballot initiatives, requiring a three-fifths vote for citizen-initiated measures, and mandating that initiatives include information on how they would affect the amount of income tax owed... Another measure requiring a three-fifths vote failed to gain approval, as did a measure allowing a state legislature to repeal a voter-approved ballot initiative.
