Founded in 1965, the Center for Civic Education is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization with a mission of promoting an enlightened and responsible citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the... The Center promotes a free and fair republic by teaching the principles and practice of democracy to millions of students and educators. Through experiential learning, high-quality materials, professional development, mentorship and ongoing research, we lead in delivering nonpartisan civic education that fosters lifelong engagement and strong communities. Imagine a classroom where students don’t just read about our founding principles and constitutional history but experience them firsthand.

Through inquiry-based instruction supported by proven professional learning, educators transform civic education into an active, real-world journey. This approach builds civil dialogue, analytical thinking and real-life problem-solving skills—fostering communities grounded in mutual respect and shared responsibility. Since our founding, we’ve reached over 50 million students and 440,000 educators. We created and hosted the We the People National Finals—America’s premier civics competition for 38 years and running—and deliver our core programs in all 50 states and D.C. through a robust network of state partners. Q: How do you describe the big goals your organization is working to achieve?

How do you measure impact? At the Civic Education Center (CEC), we inspire students to become informed, engaged citizens through our comprehensive programs. Our innovative approach provides students and educators with the tools, resources, and support needed to achieve meaningful civic engagement. The Civic-Based Learning Program (CBLP) guides K-12 students to critically analyze American civic values and apply common ground solutions to real problems in their school and community. Through a structured, project-based curriculum using the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, students transition from guided learning to independent civic action. The program connects youth with community leaders, organizations, and local resources, incorporating civil dialogue and authentic youth voice to ensure their projects are impactful.

Teachers receive comprehensive support, including curriculum modeling and hands-on guidance, equipping them to lead students through a six-step civic engagement model—from issue identification to project execution and community presentation. With key components like the Educator Institute, Youth Summit, Scout Island Program, and Youth Showcase, CBLP turns classroom learning into real-world change, fostering leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. CEC consults with districts and schools to support students earning the State Seal. This award is for graduates who meet the criteria and contribute to their school, community or nation. Descriptions of our most popular workshops include the following: The social studies standards for grades K-2 and 3-5 that will be effective starting in September 2022 are focused on civic literacy. We offer half-day (2 ½ hours) or full-day (5 hours) workshops to help your teachers understand and meet these new standards with highly engaging materials and classroom strategies. The newly enacted “Laura Wooten’s Law” requires a course of study in civics in middle school and directs the New Jersey Center to provide materials, technical assistance and professional development and other activities to... Project Citizen is a project-based civic education program that involves students in understanding public policy and emphasizes responsible participation in local and state government. Students learn how to interact with government agencies to effect change.

Project Citizen is a project based civic education program for students grades 3-12. It emphasizes responsible participation in local and state government. The program involves students in understanding public policy. In the process students develop an appreciation and feelings of civic empowerment. Entire classes of students work cooperatively in small groups to effect change in their community. Students develop a digital portfolio that documents their work, and upload it to a website where it can be shared with other classes.

See projects from the New Jersey State Project Citizen Showcases from 2012 through 2025. The Project Citizen curriculum focuses on the role of the state and local governments. It involves a whole class of middle and high school students in cooperative learning activities that are guided by their teachers. The New Jersey Center for Civic Education offers free, full-day Project Citizen workshops for New Jersey teachers at Rutgers University every year.
