CoCalc: Collaborative Calculations and Data Science A CoCalc Cloud File System is “the third way” to store and access your data on Compute Servers, in addition to the home directory of your project and Fast Local Directories.
It combines a lot of advantages into a single package: Fully POSIX Compliant: A Cloud File System is a fully POSIX compliant distributed file system built using JuiceFS, KeyDB and Google Cloud Storage. If you don’t know what this means and aren’t interested in technical details, the bottom line is that it behaves as a “normal file system” and you can do anything you want with it. Store just one file, clone a big git repository, even compile software on it! This file system works and is reasonably fast for a networked file system. Independent: A Cloud File System is independent of any compute server and can be moved from one project to another.
Shared: By default a Cloud File System is automounted to all compute servers in the project, no matter where they are located. You can both read and write to it from multiple locations (POSIX lock is supported, but behavior will be undefined if you write to the same file simultaneously without a lock). Unlimited: There is no concept of overall size or free space for a Cloud File System. You can write to it as much as you want, and only the used size will change. Below we highlight the most important features for you as a student. CoCalc is a collaborative cloud environment that supports courses based on interactive resources such as Jupyter Notebooks, the Linux terminal, LaTeX document editors, etc. You can access it from your browser, meaning that you do not need to install anything. All work in CoCalc is done in Projects that work as virtual computers and give you computational resources, a file system for your work, and a preconfigured software environment. You will have a dedicated project automatically created for each course that you are enrolled into. CoCalc offers a comprehensive workspace for computational research and education.
Users collaboratively edit LaTeX documents with live preview, code in Jupyter Notebooks (supporting Python, R, Octave, and more), or work directly in Linux terminals – all within a browser-based environment. Changes are synchronized instantly across all collaborators in a project. Additionally, the platform ensures automatic version control through its TimeTravel functionality, allowing users to review or restore any previous file state. Academic teams use CoCalc to collaborate on research papers, conduct reproducible data analyses, and deliver interactive coursework. Its browser-based access to specialized scientific tools makes it particularly convenient for remote collaboration. Features like chat, @mentions, and messaging for team communication further streamline group coordination.

So, what makes CoCalc different from them?
CoCalc strives to give you as much flexibility as possible. Instead of deciding what you are allowed to do, we only put in place necessary security limits and, of course, have to deal with technical ones. Moreover, we try to push even those limits! You can’t be root in regular CoCalc projects, but you can request installation of any necessary packages and you can install anything as a regular user. On compute servers you are able to do anything on the underlying virtual machines, including creation of nested virtual machines! There are UI libraries that are not supported by our Jupyter notebook implementation, but we do try to improve it and you can run a standard JupyterLab or VS Code instance with a click...
