Throughout the Dental Hygiene program at Lewis and Clark, I had the opportunity to provide care on the Mobile Health Unit, at the St. Louis VA Hospital and at Beverly Farms Developmental Center. The Mobile Health Unit, associated with the college, travels to different schools and establishments in the area to assist underprivileged patients who may not have access to a dental office. Throughout this experience I assisted with basic exams, radiographs, pediatric prophylaxis and sealant placement. The VA St. Louis Health Care System provides inpatient and ambulatory care in several fields of medicine including dentistry.

It serves veterans and their families in the east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois. At the VA, I performed prophylaxis treatment on several patients in a real-world situation. Beverly Farms is home to nearly 400 people who live with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The people who live at Beverly Farm come from throughout the United States. At Beverly Farms I was able to perform prophylaxis and focus on interacting with special needs patients. Additionally, I have volunteered for Give Kids a Smile in St.

Louis, Missouri and Alton, IL. These clinics, held at the Center for Advanced Dental Education at St. Louis University and Southern Illinois University - School of Dental Medicine, provides free comprehensive dental care to grade school children with inadequate access due to financial or geographic reasons. At these events, I assisted various local dentists with patients and provided prophylaxis procedures and helped with assembly and disassembly of equipment and supplies. At the time I acquired this position the girls were ages three and five. This was a longstanding position lasting approximately seven years. The activities I perform as a caregiver include but is not limited to Constructive play: Arts and crafts, board games, card games, imaginary play etc. Outings to parks, beaches, community events, restaurants, etc. Extended care, lasting more than a day and overnight

"The dental hygienist will be able to initiate and assume responsibility for health promotion and disease prevention activities for diverse population. " Coming into this program, I knew that I would enjoy any community involvement opportunities that I was presented with. However, I did not expect to be leading any of these programs. That was out of my comfort zone.

However, I have been given the opportunity to be both a participant and a leader in community efforts, and both have been equally as gratifying. Through my community involvement, I have learned to interact with various populations, learn what needs are out there that are not being met, and learn how to create and implement my own efforts in... Click each photo below to learn more about my community involvement. At Lexington Learning Center, I had the opportunity to create an education program to meet the needs of special needs individuals and their oral health. This was a unique opportunity to implement a program from the ground up, and really challenged me to be proactive and think outside the box. I felt grateful for an opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and reach out to the sweet individuals that we worked with.
