The Bachelor’s Programme in Computer Science provides skills that are useful both now and in the future, in workplaces as well as in research. The field offers a bright outlook for employment. Bachelor’s graduates find diverse job opportunities matching their qualifications, and the Bachelor of Science degree qualifies them for continued studies in the Master’s Programme in Computer Science or the Master’s Programme in Data Science

The Bachelor’s Programme in Science is a multidisciplinary international bachelor’s programme in the natural sciences. Based on research in physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics, computer science and data science, the programme offers comprehensive skills and competence, providing a solid basis for master’s studies in these fields. The Bachelor’s Programme in Science is taught in English. The Master’s Programme in Computer Science will help you gain the skills required of experts in your chosen field of specialisation. You can choose studies from the focal areas of computer science research: algorithms, information networks or software engineering. The master’s programme is multilingual, but teaching is provided in English.

Courses and theses can also be completed in Finnish or Swedish, unless reasons related to teaching require otherwise. In our multilingual programme, students are a part of an international community of students and researchers. Algorithm research is characterised by the development of new algorithmic solutions for well-defined problems, an exact mathematical approach and computational modelling. Research focuses especially on the theory of artificial intelligence and machine learning, exact algorithms for NP-hard problems, string processing, succinct data structures and the modelling of biological systems, such as evolution. Some researchers concentrate on the theoretical aspects of algorithms, others on the practical optimisation of algorithms, and yet others specialise in algorithmic tailoring for bioinformatics and life science informatics. The algorithmic bioinformatics group aims to provide a solid foundation for reliable and scalable methods enabling new breakthroughs.

The group’s research is based on the development of biological sequencing data and algorithmic analysis and assembly techniques. The group comprises five teams: The algorithmic data science group aims to develop efficient and easily manageable data systems and use them for novel applications. The group’s research covers all stages of data science, from data management and processing to model inference and applied data analysis. The bioinformatics and evolution research group develops algorithms and algorithmic theory that help produce better tools for studying and understanding evolution. In its research, the group uses big data and collaborates closely with both clinicians and experimental researchers.

In the Master’s Programme in Computer Science, you can become an expert in a wide range of fields. You will have access to the focus areas of research in computer science at the University of Helsinki: algorithms, distributed or networked systems, and software engineering.
