dataset catalog science on a sphere

NIU Libraries works collaboratively with University faculty and staff to develop and visualize datasets formatted for Science on a Sphere. Below are some examples. The complete NOAA dataset catalog available for Science on a Sphere can be found on their website. List of datasets of environmental systems, including relevant to energy systems The Science On a Sphere® Dataset Catalog is comprised of datasets from NOAA, NASA, universities, science centers and other organizations. Each dataset entry includes a description of the dataset, a picture, a video, notable features, relevant links, and source information.

Live programs are carefully crafted presentations that use SOS datasets to tell a story and teach audiences about a specific topic, such as ocean currents or extreme weather events. Build and download a playlist of Science On a Sphere® datasets for your SOS from the comfort of your web browser. Exhibitions are included with General Admission. Science On a Sphere® (SOS) is a revolutionary, state-of-the-art exhibit designed by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration with content from NASA to illustrate planetary and celestial systems like never before. Stunning images from the Hubble Space Telescope, orbital satellites, space probes, and other sources are shown on this sphere during interactive presentations. All SOS Presentations take place in the IMAS Theater and are FREE with General Admission.

Doors to the IMAS Theater may be closed at times during a presentation for enhanced visitor experience, but visitors are welcome to enter at any time during public presentations. The SOS can also be reserved for guided group tours. The IMAS was the first museum in Texas to house the SOS exhibit, opening the Science On a Sphere in September 2008, and is one of only 162 institutions across the world with SOS. This exhibit can be found at cutting edge museums including the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugarland, The Tech Museum of Innovation (San Jose), Science Museum of Virginia, Queensland Museum in Australia, Hong... This exhibit has a catalog with over 550 datasets, including 45 real-time datasets. NOAA’s latest global models and observations from across the world can be found in the database including:

< Return to BIO Curriculum Step 1: Observation and Discussion < Return to BIO Curriculum Step 3: Data Sketches Resources to be Used for Observation and Discussion (Step 1) and Data Sketches (Step 3) NOAA Science On a Sphere Global data animations from NOAA spanning topics from Climate to Ocean Currents, Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Population Density, Nighttime Lights and more. Many of these datasets are already captured in our Library of Mapped Data Images , so check there first. Options for viewing: • SOS Explorer available as a free Windows download or a free mobile app • SOS Dataset Catalog We suggest using this resource for the mapped data in Step 1 of BIO.

You can display the dataset in high resolution, even show the flat map right in the application. In addition, your students can get SOS Explorer Mobile to look even deeper at the data on a tablet, phone or ChromeBook. This dataset comprises question-and-answer (QA) pairs generated from NOAA's Science On a Sphere (SOS) website, including support documentation and the dataset catalog. Each entry contains a prompt and a corresponding completion, designed to support educational and research use cases in Earth science. This dataset includes a custom dataset_script.py and a consolidated file sos_qa_pairs.jsonl that together define and structure the QA-style data derived from NOAA's Science On a Sphere® catalog. The dataset is intended for use alongside NOAA's SOS product line, including physical SOS installations and the SOS Explorer® platform.

SOS Explorer is a flat-screen version of SOS that enables interaction with SOS datasets on personal computers and mobile devices, improving access for educators, students, and the general public. This dataset is intended for training and evaluating question-answering models, with a focus on science education. It can also serve as a base for building educational tools and interactive content in conjunction with the SOS and SOS Explorer ecosystems. The dataset is not suitable for real-time operational decision-making, high-stakes assessment, or applications requiring guaranteed factual accuracy without human review. The Data Catalog tab allows you to quickly search and browse for datasets in the entire SOS Data Catalog. Simply tap on any combination of filters (Major/Sub Categories, Movies/Realtime, Year, Themes, Filters, etc.) to narrow down search and browse results.

The dataset search results will appear in the left hand side column, which can be sorted alphabetically (with the A-Z toggle button), or sorted by date added to the SOS Data Catalog (with the... Tap on a dataset to load it onto the sphere. In addition to browsing, you can search for datasets by typing in a search term in the search box. By default, the search box searches through dataset titles. Other search options such as Keywords, Description, and Creator may be selected by tapping on the Checklist button next to the search box to refine the search results. Pressing the Clear button clears all filters and search terms and shows all datasets available in the SOS Data Catalog in the datasets search results.

The numbers in the Major Categories and Subcategories lists indicate how many datasets are tagged with those category names. Any dataset that has a diamond icon at the end of its name indicates that it is a Site-Custom dataset.
