When analyzing the area at different scales, it is clear that the plot is very well connected to the rest of the city which creates an important opportunity for a shared mobility system that... Though, when zooming in on Microlab, the area seems very disconnected from the rest of the neighborhood. The building is enclosed by buildings on three sides and by a big parking area on the fourth side, making the place very unattractive. The main purpose of the project is to revive the area and bring it back to the attention of the public. By connecting it better visually and physically to the other sides of Strijp-S, the place will automatically attract more visitors and potential users. The area of Strijp-S is full of history.
It's industrial look and feel expresses its past, making it a landmark of Eindhoven. By preserving the atmosphere, Microlab will integrate and connect better with its neighborhood. By creating an attractive and open design, we aim to create a lively atmosphere which will attract visitors and users of the area, making it the new hotspot of Strijp-S. There is a shortage for affordable student housing in Eindhoven. Our design will provide different sizes of apartments, together with a large storage space, laundry room and a communal courtyard, in order to enhance their living experience. When visiting the area of Strijp-S, it’s very hard to miss the youthful, lively and creating feeling of the place.
Through, the area of Microlab seems disconnected and it’s atmosphere doesn’t belong to the rest of the neighborhood. Micro-S project aims to reinvent the Microlab area and to bring it back to the attention of the public. Our team tackled these issues with 3 themes in mind: connectivity, liveliness and industrial atmosphere. These goals shaped the design from the beginning until the end. Mirco-S has both commercial and residential functions that aims to attract students, young couples and starters, as well as small local businesses which will complement the atmosphere and functions of the rest of Strijp-S. The Micro-S plan consists of a redeveloped West wing of Microlab with an overhang extension together with 3 new buildings blocks that also offer the opportunity for social housing.
Our project offers the users three separate outdoor, green areas: a recreational square in front of Microlab where visitors but especially the users of the offices can take a break outdoor, a park enclosed... Besides residential functions, Micro-S offers 16 retail areas and a multitude of flexible offices for small businesses and young entrepreneurs. Micro-S offers 115 apartments, 67 in the renewed west-wing of Microlab and 48 in the new apartment blocks out of which 16 belong to the social housing sector. The apartments vary in size, ranging from 30m2 to 80m2, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. The high ceiling of the apartments and the exposed steel trusses confer a unique interior, preserving the industrial atmosphere of the space. This section provides in depth information about our design, with focus on structural details, building physics calculations and technical drawings.
In order to become energy neutral before 2050 several sustainable building systems will be used. With the use of solar panels, a heat pump and thermal energy storage the entire building can be heated with water and electricity. The façades of Microlab have been updated in the renovation with a thicker insulation layer, to reduce transmission heat losses, and the thermal bridges are solved. Besides, the structure should be dimensioned correctly and function in a stable way. The sequence of building is explained in order to make the building process understandable. The façade has a layer of 20cm insulation to reduce the transmission losses as much as possible.
The floor also has insulation to prevent the heat from underfloor heating to go down and heat up the floor slabs. This shortens the reaction time of the system. A critical point in the structure is the connection between the new building and the old Microlab. It is important that the waterproofing layer and the vapor layer are continuing over the whole corner connection in an efficient way. This is also the case for the insulation layer which should run over the façade without interruption because thermal bridges will arise. These two details show two sections plane which come together in the corner connection and therefore will flow over in each other in the critical corner.
The truss penetrates the wall from exterior through interior and because steel conducts heat very well, this forms a real problem. Optimally this problem is solved by aligning the (interior)walls with the truss for the first 2 meters, in order to eliminate the thermal bridge with little to no extra materials used. However, there are 2 apartments where this is not an option, as it creates difficult area sizes, here a thermal bridge interrupter will be implemented in the truss.
