The new research buttresses a previous report, which demonstrated scholarship recipients outperformed their low-income peers in Illinois public schools in reading and math.

Scholarship recipients in 11th grade not only outperformed their low-income peers but also outperformed the average proficiency rate for all Illinois 11th graders. Unfortunately, lawmakers, under pressure from Illinois teachers unions, let the program die, and 15,000 low-income kids lost access to their schools. Now Illinoisans are seeing Invest in Kids not only supported students’ academic achievement, but it saved taxpayers money as well. Illinois offers K–12 students and their families several types of school choice, including one private school choice programs, charter schools, magnet schools, home schooling and intra-district public school choice via an open enrollment policy. Illinois has one private school choice program; an individual tax credit for educational expenses. This program help families afford to send their children to participating private schools.

Illinois has a limited intra-district open enrollment policy that allow some parents to transfer to traditional public schools within their district. Illinois does have magnet schools. Illinois has charter schools. Charter schools are publicly funded schools that are free of many of the regulations that restrict traditional public schools. Parents have to follow certain laws in Illinois when homeschooling their children.
