everything you need to know about the summit of the future

A once in a generation event at UN Headquarters will present an opportunity for the international community to forge a new path and safeguard our common future. In 2020, the UN turned 75 and marked the occasion by starting a global conversation about hopes and fears for the future. This was the beginning of a process that would eventually lead, four years later, to the convening of the Summit of the Future, a major event this September, which will take place at UN... The Summit was conceived at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when there was a perception at the UN that, rather than cooperating to face this global threat that affected all of us, countries... “We were really confronted with the gap between the aspirations of our founders, which we were trying to celebrate at the 75th anniversary, and the reality of the world as it is today”, says... “The problems that we faced, the threats, but also the opportunities and the imperfections in how we respond”.

As global challenges intensify, the world faces a pivotal question: Is there a better way to govern our future? With this in mind, the United Nations is hosting a landmark event this September that promises to reshape international cooperation. The Summit of the Future, held at the UN Headquarters, is being hailed as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for countries to unite and create a more equitable, sustainable world. In 2020, as the UN marked its 75th anniversary, it sparked a global conversation centered on humanity’s hopes and fears for the future. This dialogue set the stage for what would eventually become the Summit of the Future, convening at the UN Headquarters in New York this September, just ahead of the annual General Assembly debate. The Summit was conceived during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rather than seeing the world come together to combat a shared threat, the UN observed nations drifting apart, exposing deep flaws in global cooperation. “We were really confronted with the gap between the aspirations of our founders, which we were trying to celebrate at the 75th anniversary, and the reality of the world as it is today,” explains... As the world gears up for the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) and the Summit of the Future, understanding the stakes and opportunities has never been more crucial. Dive into our comprehensive guide featuring a Q&A breaking down everything you need to know about UNGA, insightful commentaries delving into the five key chapters from the Pact for the Future, a transformative framework... Though it did not register too deeply on the radars of mainstream media, the most important outcome of the 79th United Nations General Assembly last week was the Summit of the Future. Yes, presidents and prime ministers gave important speeches, and, yes — this UNGA unfolded as conflict in the Middle East escalated sharply.

But I would bet that in five or ten years from now, the single most important event of UNGA79 was the Summit of the Future and the adoption of its outcome document, the Pact... This almost didn’t happen. Russia raised some last-minute objections to the Pact on the very morning the General Assembly was meeting to adopt it. Russia’s objections were skillfully shot down through some procedural craftiness by Congo, and then the Pact was adopted by consensus. So, what exactly did the Summit of the Future achieve? As the dust was settling on UNGA79, I caught up with Daniel Perell, Representative to the United Nations for the Baha'i International Community, and someone who has been following and participating in the Summit...

“It is a long document with many important and new initiatives that were ‘out of bounds’ a few years ago, but are now being discussed,” Daniel Perell tells me. The Summit of the Future is a two-day event on September 22 and 23 that marks the opening of the United Nations General Assembly and High-Level Week. It is billed as a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity to revitalize the UN and multilateralism during a time of great global turmoil, aiming to restore trust in international cooperation as a means of solving common global... While this may sound impractically idealistic, the Summit itself is the culmination of years of discussions, negotiations, and diplomacy around concrete policies and proposals intended to bring about specific reforms to the UN that... Our “To Save Us From Hell” podcast episode today is devoted entirely to the Summit of the Future and some of the specific UN reforms on the table. Co-hosts Anjali Dayal and Mark Leon Goldberg have an in-depth conversation with the Stimson Center’s Richard Ponzio about the significance of the Summit of the Future and what to expect from the Summit’s three...
