Exchange Studies Lut University
LUT University welcomes every year around 200 exchange students to its Lappeenranta campus located by beautiful Lake Saimaa only two-hour train ride away from the capital Helsinki. Starting from the Autumn semester 2025, LUT University will also offer exchange studies for selected study fields at the Lahti campus, even closer to the capital area. The international student community at LUT University is strong and there are plenty of cultural theme nights, parties and all sorts of get-togethers organized. For instance, the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is active both in Lappeenranta and Lahti. LUT offers for exchange students a wide variety of courses taught in English in the fields of business, technology and social sciences. You can find our course offer for exchange students below.

On this page you will find information about: Before you can start the application process to LUT University, you need to be nominated by your home institution. When the nomination is processed, you will receive an email asking you to register to LUT Mobility-Online. Please make sure to start the application process right away after receiving the email confirming your nomination. Once you have created an account in LUT Mobility-Online, you are able to fill out the needed information and attach the required application documents.

LUT University is a very diverse campus, and many students come to LUT to pursue their studies as international degree students every year. Although you may consider your studies in Finland to be a cultural adventure within itself, it’s okay if you want to explore another country for exchange studies as well! At LUT, both Finnish degree students and international degree students can pursue exchange opportunities around the world at partner institutions, and you have the chance to double internationalise as a bachelor’s or master’s student. LUT has about 200 partners worldwide. Here are possibilities for exchange during your studies at LUT. Exchange semesters are possible for degree students of all levels and at more than 200 universities in more than 40 countries (Europe, Asia, North America, or South America).
Studies abroad should be included in your degree at LUT so completing an exchange does not postpone your graduation! Sometimes it is possible to obtain credits for your elective studies, but it may also be possible to pursue minor studies on exchange as well. Each degree programme has their list of recommended exchange partners where previous students from that degree programme have happily found suitable course offerings. You can find those lists, all the other exchange places and all the relevant information in eLUT. So you can start planning your exchange right now! All degree students can apply for student exchange and complete part of their studies abroad.
There are hundreds of universities to choose from! Planning your exchange takes time: start now by learning about the application process, exchange destinations and scholarships using the links below. Exchange studies are for everyone! For example, a wheelchair or children are not an obstacle, and in the Erasmus+ programme, special groups can receive a larger grant. Congratulations, you are about to Go Global! Becoming an exchange student is simply the best way to improve your language skills and intercultural competence, not to mention making international friends! You will also be able to take courses your home university doesn't offer. Application rounds are held twice a year, both during the spring semester. In Autumn semester there are no application rounds. Most students go on exchange for a single semester.
For the European Erasmus+ destinations, it's also possible to apply for the full academic year (if you apply in the January application round). After you have accepted the exchange study offer, LUT nominates you (sends your information) to the host university.
Then, your exchange university will contact you and guide you on how to make the application in their system. Each university has a different schedule: for the autumn semester, some start the process in March, some (most of them) in May – it might take several weeks or months for them to reach... Make sure you are reachable: your email address on LUT Mobility-Online should be the one you use regularly. Both LUT and your exchange university will contact you regularly to dispense important recent information – which often require your reaction or reply. Contact forum in Moodle for those wishing to connect with other LUT students heading for the same region, course key: ExchangeStudies. All the information (courses, visa, accommodation, language proficiency certificates) will come from the exchange university.
If the application instructions are not clear, contact them directly. After you have received the instructions, start early: you might need to collect signatures for your documents or take a language proficiency test. In case you need a medical statement or vaccinations, consult the YTHS. As a LUT student, now is probably your best chance of expand your world with new international experiences - which can be gained either abroad or at home! Develop your intercultural competence, make lifelong friendships, sample new culinary treats and learn new things and study fields, in new ways.
Being a student at KU Leuven University in Brussels has been one of the best choices I have made in my life. At first, moving abroad felt scary and everything was new, but now this place feels like a second home, and I wish I could stay here longer. The university offers an excellent academic environment with great professors and fellow students from all around the world. Studying here is truly inspiring and rewarding. As an exchange student, you get a wonderful and career-enhancing opportunity to move abroad for - and get paid for it! Exchange studies and other forms of internationalization are meant for everyone: for example, a wheelchair or children are not an obstacle, and in the Erasmus+ programme special groups can receive a larger grant. All LUT students selected for exchange receive a grant. The grant is highest for Erasmus+ destinations (all of LUT's European partner universities except two Norwegian universities: BI and NHH, for which the students receive the Norek Network grant). Various aspects can motivate one to apply for exchange study: perhaps you are interested in a specific country, city or a culture? LUT exchange students are also required to complete courses: 30 ECTS credits per semester is the recommendation. Thus, it is essential to consider also the course offerings. 1. Select the upcoming academic year (when your exchange would begin) to see the universities LUT has an active agreement with. Every student completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree at LUT University is a member of the student union. Exchange students and doctoral students can also be members. Registering as a member and paying the membership fee most often takes place in connection with the semester registration. Members of the student union are entitled to a Slice student card.
It offers various benefits both locally and nationally. You can find more information about the benefits on Slice’s website. The exchange student’s student union membership fee is 42 € per semester or 74 € per academic year (in academic year 2025-2026). Membership fees can be paid at the office or online shop. LUT University’s international student community is strong, and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) plays a significant role among exchange students in Lahti and Lappeenranta. Orientation days for exchange students starting their studies @ LUT in January 2026 are organized from 2nd of January to 5th of January for Lappeenranta campus students. Orientation is compulsory for all new students. Some orientation programme is also arranged on Friday 9.1. Newcomers participate in orientation online on 2.1 Friday and on-campus on 5.1 Monday. Note!
