Hopefully it gives you some insight as to where to start when you’re just starting out with learning the Finnish language. I will soon be releasing another article dealing with the way language is assessed and divided in levels within Europe using the CEFR system. A2 can be called the “advanced beginner level” or the “beginner intermediate level”. It’s what comes after level A1 and before level B1. There is a progression from A2.1 to A2.2 which follows the following pattern. Both of these levels contain beginner/intermediate Finnish topics.

Coursebooks that contain A2 level topics generally contain the following content. Please note that this is the general tendency. Even more so than A1-level books, there is variation in what’s included between different A2-level books. My intent is just to give you a basic idea of the biggest themes that you will run into in Finnish textbooks once you have a grasp of the very basics. On completion of the course, the student will understand simple and clearly spoken Finnish in very familiar everyday situations. The student will be able to tell briefly about their background, home and daily routines and understand very short texts about familiar topics.

The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skill level A1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). • Oral and written communication in everyday contexts: home and leisure time, spending time with friends, travelling, work and profession • Grammatical structures, for example locative cases, the most common noun types, using the... The assessment emphazises criteria a–d and f. Students that have reached the level 3 are able to a) use phrases, quite versatile vocabulary and grammatical knowledge (CEFR levels A1.2?A1.3) in everyday communication.

Students have been able to complete all the assignments acceptably and attended contact lessons at least 80 %. Students have a positive and active attitude towards learning language. They can pronounce Finnish distinctively. They manage quite well in everyday conversations related to topics studied in the course. They can write simple texts quite correctly and recombine words and phrases into new sentences so that used typical grammatic structures are almost correct. They understand the importance of good Finnish language skills to get a job in Finland.

Students are more confident in using Finnish. After the course, they are able to tell and write about their daily life by using simple expressions and to communicate in everyday situations, such as ordering food and drinks at a restaurant or... They extend their knowledge of the basic vocabulary, grammar and typical structures of the Finnish language. They are further acquainted with the Finnish way of life.
