The United States is the most represented country or territory, with 197 ranked institutions, followed by the United Kingdom with 90 and mainland China with 71. For the 13th consecutive year, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) maintains its reign at the top. Imperial College London jumps four places to take second and the University of Oxford and Harvard University are in third and fourth place respectively. The University of Cambridge rounds out the top five.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US JYU’s position in the latest ranking was 498, while in 2024 it finished at 489. Making the list is an achievement in itself, as it comprises only the top 1,500 universities in the world. Of the nine universities from Finland on the list, JYU was seventh. The ranking list was dominated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States and the Imperial College London in England.
The ranking is based on five indicators with different weightings: Research and Discovery 50% (based on academic reputation and citations per faculty), Employer Reputation and Employment Outcomes 20%, Faculty Student Ratio 10%, Global Engagement... JYU received the best score in the ratio of students to teaching staff. The University’s international research network was also deemed to be very high quality.
