In the framework of an ambitious digital agenda for France’s higher education, the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research launched in autumn 2013 France’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform, France Université Numérique. France Université Numérique (FUN) provides a wide audience, notably in French-speaking countries, with numerous free classes in every discipline and, in the long term, the possibility for certification and issuance of a diploma. Particular attention is paid to the needs of developing countries. FUN thus aims to be an effective cooperation tool. While digital technology is transforming ways of teaching, the development of online classes in the next decade will redraw the international academic landscape. While initiatives had already been implemented at individual universities, there was no national platform to pool MOOCs that could disseminate and promote the teaching offered by French higher education establishments in France and abroad.

The role digital technology can play in enhancing the attractiveness of the French higher education system and the influence of its research, particularly in French-speaking countries, is essential.
