In all seriousness, the locals call it the Big Island because the name of the island is Hawaii, but so is the name of the entire state. So because it's the biggest island, to avoid confusion it's The Big Island. I did get the answer right on my second guess, though. And to preempt your response: yes, I know what the dictionary definition of "contiguous" is, and yes, I know Long Island is not connected by land to mainland New York or New Jersey. But it's a five-minute drive to the mainland with no traffic. If you took the Long Island Railroad, you wouldn't even notice you were leaving an island.
