From virtual field trips to road trips, from cruises to learning about maps, studying geography is so much fun for everyone! Geography was always one of my favorite subjects to teach because there are so many ways to teach it without a textbook or curriculum. In addition, you can easily incorporate crafts, cooking, travel and so much more to create a complete hands-on learning experience for your children.

I’ve broken down the free homeschool geography resources below by grade or level as much as possible. There are options for children from Kindergarten to High School/College Prep included! I don't like to spend a lot of money on Geography because it's one of those subjects that tends to fall by the wayside in our homeschool.

These concepts are in addition to the books AO schedules about far-away places and peoples. Even with just a couple of concepts in a term, over the course of six years, many topics can be taught.

In Home Education, (volume 1 of her Series, pg 72-78) Charlotte Mason talks about teaching these kinds of things during outdoor time. These concepts are best taught through observation, but if you would like a book to help explain these concepts, topics are lined up with corresponding chapters from both Home Geography for Primary Grades by... AO schedules them systematically for convenience using Long's book as a guide. Term 1: The world is round. Left, right, front (before), back (behind) are positions; know which is which and realize they are dependent on perspective. These topics are covered in these chapters: Charlotte Mason's Elementary Geography: Our World Part I Long's Home Geography 1.

Position Term 2: Fixed direction (north, south, east, west). The sun shows direction: East is where the sun rises, west is where it sets. Stars (North or Pole Star, constellations) show direction and help mariners find their way. The length and direction of shadows can help us tell time as well as direction. The line dividing it across the middle is the equator; its parallel lines are latitude. The line where the earth meets the sky is called the horizon. Others join EP just because it’s easy and fun and they’re confident of the quality of education. In 2011, I (Lee Giles) began putting my children’s assignments online so that they could work independently and so that I had the assignments saved for their younger siblings. I also wrote it from the beginning to be able to be used by other families. EP grade levels and individual courses include 180 days of homeschool lessons and assignments. It covers reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, math, history/social studies/geography, science, Spanish, Bible, computer, music, art, PE/health, and logic.

It uses only free materials found on the internet. This site holds preschool, kindergarten, and first through eighth. We have a separate high school site. Choosing a level (on My EP) will set reading, language arts, math, computer and logic, any of which can be switched to a more appropriate level without affecting the others. Choosing a theme enables all of your children to study the same topic at the same time. The themes are based around the history courses of ancient history, early American history, geography and cultures, and modern history.

Music and art are part of these themes and science is set to what would typically be studied at the same time. You choose the courses. Set it and forget it. Then your child just clicks on the assignment box for each course (found on My EP) and does their assignment. It will track what lesson they are on and their days. It does not save any other information.

We do not keep any records of your students. It’s just an aid for you. Finding the right homeschool geography curriculum can feel overwhelming with so many options available. Geography is more than just maps, it helps kids connect with the world, understand different cultures, and recognize how landscapes shape history. As a homeschool mom of over 7 years, I’ve found that combining structured lessons with hands-on activities makes learning geography more engaging and memorable.
