As society continues to reel from the toll of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine rumbles on and seems likely to become the central issue about which geopolitics will soon be redrawn. Meanwhile, the conflict between Israel and Hamas remains deeply traumatic despite steps being made toward a ceasefire, with experts worried that outrage around the conflict could easily spill into a wider escalation of violence... Others point to the rise of authoritarianism and fascism in several Western countries, suggesting the catastrophic end of liberal democracy may soon be at hand. On top of that, the existential threat of climate change grows increasingly hard to ignore, as weather conditions become undeniably more extreme even as countries around the world fail to meet their self-imposed climate...

Worryingly, various mystics and religious figures have long prophesied that 2025 would be a critical year for humanity, with Nostradamus, Baba Vanga, and others all making some disturbing claims as to what the coming... Nostradamus' chilling 2025 predictions made headlines at the start of the year (as they do every year), with outlets around the world attempting to decode the mysterious prophecies he seemingly put forward in his... The 16th century French seer's work certainly seems to chime uncannily with prevailing world events. Nostradamus predicts that 2025 will be a time of "cruel wars" in Europe (per The Times of India). That the Ukraine-Russia war has already been raging for three years seems to suggest an escalation of the conflict, and it is true that other European countries are now seeking to raise defense spending... That the war could expand to include countries in the NATO alliance — who are all obliged to defend members against foreign aggression — could see nuclear powers such as France, the U.K., and...

He also seems to suggest that the symptoms of climate change will become even more severe in 2025, predicting mass flooding and natural disasters; indeed, headlines at the start of the year were dominated... Even more worryingly, Nostradamus predicts a catastrophe involving an asteroid, uncannily mirroring alarms from scientists that we are due a close call with a passing asteroid ... though that is not due to take place until 2032, per scientific models. We can also take solace in the fact that many of Nostradamus' predictions for 2024 and previous years failed to come to pass. There are no written records of Baba Vanga's predictions, so it is impossible to know what prophecies she actually made before her death in 1996.

A rumor that a Bulgarian mystic known as Baba Vanga predicted that the "end times will commence in 2025" circulated online in October 2024. One X post that made such a claim had more than 15.5 million views as of this writing and had been reposted more than 6,000 times. The post also featured a Community Note stating: "Baba Vanga has a history of incorrect predictions, such as an alien invasion that was supposed to occur in 2022." Other X users who shared the post added tongue-in-cheek comments, with one person writing: "She says this every year girl wrap it upppppp," while another asked: "Did she say when the brat remix album... Baba Vanga died in 1996 at the age of 84 but has become known as the "Nostradamus of the Balkans" as a result of her many "predictions" that have allegedly come true. I truly appreciate it. We are living in incredibly interesting times — to say the least — and 2025 will be no different. The post WWII world order is definitely over, and the world economy faces massive challenges among growing polarization and geopolitical upheaval. We are witnessing a worldwide struggle for resources, energy, trade routes and growing financial instability. Western and Eurasian powers are at war with each other on multiple fronts. This, however, is not a war between good and evil where the good side wins and everyone lives happily after.

As thing stand today we are in for an awful long race to the bottom. Industrial civilization — based on finite and polluting resources — is unsustainable, no matter how much we want it to succeed and no matter where we live. Life is going to be extremely hard without this much technology, and ultimately it will not matter which team you rooted for. The only way through this bottleneck (if there is any) will be via collaboration, self sufficiency, small local economies and building small scale democratic structures. Large geopolitical entities are on their way out, and even the strongest survivor will fall eventually. Again, coming from a world dominated by the Western narrative of things, the following might seem contra intuitive at best, or outright upsetting at worst. As usual, I strongly advise my readers to seek out alternative sources of information, and to take anything appearing on mainstream media with a huge pinch of salt.

We are living through the collapse of modernity — which unlike the movies — will take decades to unfold in a slow motion trainwreck. No one will come on TV and admit that we are running out of stuff and the only way through this massive bottleneck is collaboration. Instead we will hear more rhetoric advocating for more war, more great power competition, “removing of red tape” and the like. So, treat what you hear, see and read lightly, and always keep this larger context in mind. Prepare for a tumultuous 2025. It is perhaps not terribly risky to start by saying: we should expect more of the same in 2025.

A deepening energy crisis, leading to further deindustrialization, layoffs and plant closures. Higher inflation, lower living standards — and not just in the EU. An accelerating collapse in discretionary spending (vehicles, leisure, consumer products etc.). Less democracy but more political theater to obscure the true extent of the West’s malaise. Peace talks commencing between the US and Russia, with fighting still going on unabated, and with European’s being pushed to the sidelines. Created in 1947 by a group of scientists who worked on the atomic bomb, the Doomsday Clock represents how close humanity might be to destruction.

Over the years, the clock has been set further or closer to midnight according to an increasingly diverse range of threats, from nuclear capabilities to climate change.
