Heal Divisions End Conflicts Invest In People Peace Secretary
Following are UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ remarks at the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Moment event, in New York today: The Sustainable Development Goals represent a bold vision: a commitment to a better, healthier, safer and more prosperous and sustainable future. But the Goals are facing massive headwinds. More than four out of five SDG targets are off track. On top of the impacts from a global pandemic, many countries are being crushed by massive debt burdens, limited liquidity and sky-high borrowing costs. Conflicts, hunger, inequalities and the climate crisis are all intensifying.
And the global financial architecture is not providing developing countries with sufficient financing and liquidity or to act as an effective safety net for all. The world has the wealth, the technology and the know-how to achieve the SDGs. New Delhi: The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has urged world leaders to focus on three key areas in order to achieve sustainable development: finance, climate action, and peace, a UN press release stated. In his remarks Tuesday Guterres said that the world needed to make a commitment to end conflicts, heal divisions, and invest in people in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). He highlighted the need for reform of the global financial architecture in order to provide developing countries with sufficient financing and liquidity. He also underscored the vital importance of ensuring that women, girls and young people are at the decision-making table.
The SDG Stimulus, which Guterres proposed at the SDG Summit in 2021, would provide at least $500 billion per year in financing for developing countries. This proposal aimed to help them work towards ending hunger, expanding renewable energy, digitalization, education, social protection, and decent work, as well as addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity... The Secretary-General also urged developed countries to double down on their climate action plans in order to help the world reach the 1.5°C limit and achieve sustainable development. He stressed the need for a rapid and just phase-out of fossil fuels and a rapid and smart scale-up of renewables in order to drive sustainable development, energy security, and economic prosperity. (AP Photo/Misper Apawu, File) UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Deep divisions especially among the world’s most powerful nations have significantly undermined what the United Nations can do to help nations move from conflict to peace, the U.N. peacekeeping chief said.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix told The Associated Press in an interview that these divisions – most notably between the U.S. and the West on one side and Russia and often China on the other -- don’t only affect peacekeeping but everything the United Nations does in trying to promote peace and security. The result is that in some cases the rivalry can lead to the presence of U.N. peacekeepers being questioned by the parties to the conflict -- or even asked to leave, as happened in Mali and is happening in Congo, he said. Twenty years ago, Lacroix said, a united international community pushed in the same direction as the United Nations to restore peace to East Timor, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cambodia. “Ceasefire.” “End the war.” “Stop the brutality.”
These are the messages of women and girls around the world: unmistakable calls for peace that UN Women channels into everything that we do. When women are at the negotiating table, peace is likelier, more inclusive and more durable. But 25 years after the launch of the Women, Peace and Security agenda – when world leaders acknowledged war’s horrific impacts on women and girls, and enshrined women’s right to equal participation in peace... Read our explainer to understand how gender equality and peace go hand-in-hand – and what’s at stake when nations fail to fully invest in them. On October 31, 2000, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted resolution 1325. After years of advocacy, this marked the launch of what’s known as the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.
Following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ message for the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, observed on 24 April: The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace highlights a fundamental truth: no country can solve today’s challenges alone. Dialogue, diplomacy and multilateral solutions provide the surest path to a peaceful and just world. These eternal ideals form the foundation of the United Nations Charter and drive global efforts to safeguard human rights and forge hope, prosperity and peace for all people. But around the world, conflicts, climate catastrophe, poverty and inequalities create enormous obstacles to diplomacy and multilateral solutions. Collaboration is consumed by competition; dialogue is overtaken by relentless division.
Diplomacy and the multilateral system itself were created precisely for moments like this. We need to resurrect a new spirit of global cooperation to rebuild trust, heal divisions, and place humanity on the path to peace. Following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ message for Peacebuilding Day, observed on 23 June: There is no higher calling than the pursuit of peace. But in far too many countries and communities around the world, peace is missing. Conflicts and violence are spreading a plague of misery, suffering and death that affects millions of people each year.
Reversing this trend requires our individual and collective actions to forge peace. It requires the timeless tools of dialogue, diplomacy and negotiation.
