The Rajabhat Universities (มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏ, RTGS: Mahawitthayalai Ratchaphat) are a group of public universities in Thailand that were originally founded as teacher training colleges. In 1995, the Thai government elevated existing teacher training colleges to so-called Rajabhat Institutes. The transformation expanded the legal mandate of these institutions, granting them the authority to confer postgraduate degrees, including doctorates.[1] Rajabhat Institutes were further transformed to Rajabhat Universities in 2005, allowing the institutions to function... There are currently 38 Rajabhat Universities. They are generally considered easier to gain admission to than the traditional public universities.[3] Most Rajabhat Universities offer graduate degrees, some even to the doctoral level. Enrollments have been shrinking.

As of 2018[update], students numbered 540,000, down from 600,000.[3] The Royal Institute Dictionary defines ราชภัฏ as "civil servant" (ข้าราชการ).[4] The word is derived from Sanskrit rājabhaṭa (राजभट), a combination of rāja (meaning king) and bhaṭa (meaning soldier or servant). The Rajabhat University system, to which BRU belongs, was created to support regional development, focusing on teacher education, community service, and research. BRU offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees across various faculties, including Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, Management Science, and Industrial Technology. The university offers courses in Thai and English, with an increasing focus on internationalization.

The university was originally launched as Buriram Teachers’ College, in direct response to the need for a large number of qualified teachers in the country. First founded in 1971, over the years it gradually added to its curriculum, starting with two-year degree courses and then moving on to four-year courses. In 1995 the Teacher College Act was replaced by Rajabhat Institute Act and with it, the name was changed to Buriram Rajabhat University.

Today there are seven faculties including the education, humanities and social sciences, management sciences, science, agricultural technology, industrial technology and nursing. Along with undergraduate degrees, there is a graduate school with programs in educational administration, curriculum and learning management, English, public administration and political economics and governance. There are also two doctoral degrees offer too: philosophy in educational administration and philosophy in leadership for professional development. There are also a range of facilities onsite including a student dormitory, hotel, sports science centre and stadium, language institute and a cultural centre, library, bank, health centre, cafeterias and computer labs.
