"To end the stigma surrounding physical disabilities through showcasing individual's unique and amazing abilities" Through educating youth about disabilities and teaching them to be inclusive of everyone Through giving youth different experiences and providing them with new perspectives It's not our disabilities, it's our abilities that count. Different Abilities was created by Logan Gillingham in order to help end the societal stigma surrounding disabilities. Back in 2017, Logan suffered a serious injury and was unable to walk unassisted for roughly three years.
During this time, she noticed that people would stare, point and make rude comments about the way that she walked. Just like Logan experienced, many people with disabilities face discrimination each and every day as they are often viewed for what they cannot do rather than what the can do. Logan knew that this was not the way things should be and decided something needed to change. This is where Different Abilities was started. Different Abilities is a youth-run initiative working towards ending the stigma surrounding disabilities through providing community members with education on abilities/disabilities and para-sport experiences. Together, our team hopes to change the perspectives of all youth to focus on everyone's abilities rather than their disabilities.
Logan is studying architecture and fine arts at the University of Windsor and the University of Detroit Mercy and hopes to pursue a career in accessible architecture. Logan plays sledge, ice and field hockey and participates in many community innovation programs to further support the development of the Different Abilities project. My name is Kelly Ceder. I am a 24 year old Graduate student at Texas State University.
I am getting my masters degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education. This website was created as a final portfolio for the class Educating Students with Mild Disabilities 5326. My Statement for Creating an Inclusive Classroom Environment: In this classroom we will accept everybody as they are. We will not make derogatory remarks towards anyone based on their skin color, gender, sexual orientation, cognitive ability, culture, disability, family dynamic or anything else that society may view as different. In this classroom we will celebrate differences and we will see that we are all human beings.
We are more alike than we are different. Everyone in this classroom deserves respect and kindness. As a teacher I will strive to give every student the best education possible. I will teach my students to appreciate one another and to cherish their friendships. I will create a welcoming classroom environment that will allow my student to feel safe and at home. I will strive to make my classroom a judgment free zone that is welcoming of all people.
I will strive to be the best mentor possible for my students. I will love my students wholeheartedly. Before my relationship with Universal Abilities, I can tell you that it was like the horror movie right after the first episode. After the introduction nothing goes right. Employment, economic and financial areas on my life was a big downhill snowball. (read more)
No one really knows what your future is going to be like, will your dreams and hopes you have set for you will come to life. My plans for my children, their childhood, teenage, college years, I had it all planned out. I had a husband, a home, a job, a car, life is great. What more can I ask for? Nothing right??? Darren Brehm remembers what it is like to look up at the corporate ladder and feel like even the bottom rung is out of reach from your wheelchair.
In 2002, nine years after a rollover car accident made him a C4-5 quad I Am Able was created to focus on the gifts, talents, hobbies, and abilities of young adults with special needs. From art, to sports, to acting, to music, these young adults are uniquely talented! I wanted to create a social media presence and blog that focuses on their abilities rather than their disability. As young adults, we are consumed with what benefits ourselves and we often don’t take the time to learn about others. This ministry is targeted towards high school and college students in hopes to fill the gap of ignorance and connect these individuals through common loves and abilities.
Exposure is the first step to changing one's mind! My hope is that students will learn how to reach out to individuals with special needs and do life together!
