UM is a flagship institution of the Montana University System[7] and its second largest campus. Fall 2024 saw total enrollment hit 10,811,[8] marking the highest total enrollment for UM since 2018. It is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" as of 2022.[9] Alumni include 11 Truman Scholars, 14 Goldwater Scholars, and 40 Udall Scholars.[10][11] One alumnus, Harold Urey, has won the Nobel Prize.[12] An act of Congress of February 18, 1881, dedicated 72 sections (46,000 acres (72 sq mi; 190 km2)) in Montana Territory for the creation of the university. We recommend Montana residents use the Apply Montana application. The application is free for Montana residents. An undergraduate college student is someone who has completed high school or earned a GED and is ready to pursue their first degree at a university. So, if you're planning to earn your first bachelor's degree at the University of Montana, that means you’ll apply for freshman admission as an undergraduate.

If you’ve been enrolled concurrently in high school and college, or if you’ve completed fewer than 12 college credits after graduating high school, you’re still in this group too. You’ll apply for freshman undergraduate admission. Walk through the application process with us and get the scoop on what you can expect.
