How to sleep well at night knowing your financial plan doesn’t depend on predicting the unpredictable by lucas 36 Comments - Updated: July 26, 2022 Shawn and Jocelyn with Jane and JL in Steamboat Springs, CO 2021 Forgive me if you have heard this tale before. I’ve told it several times now on various podcasts. It is the origin story of this blog.

Back in 2011 I began writing a series of letters to my then college age daughter about things financial. See, in the years before I had managed to turn her off to all such matters. Who knew a four-year-old wouldn’t be enthralled with the Wall Street Journal and the story of Jack Bogle and how he created Vanguard and index funds? But there you go. Photo by anvesh baru If you are surprised to see two “case study” posts from me in a row, your reaction is no more than my own. For the last one it could be charged that I succumbed to flattery and bribery in taking it on.

No case to be made for that here, as… [Continue Reading] Photo courtesy of Van Trapp Farmstead It has been a long time since we’ve done a Case Study around here, but recently I responded to an email that feels like a good one to... Well looky here. Little ol’ jlcollinsnh is growing up a bit. With this post you’ll notice three big changes. We could have done them separately, but just seemed to make sense to plunge ahead.

Before we get into all that, let me start with some well deserved “Thank You” shout outs. Truly, with my near total lack of technical skill, none of this would have been possible without the help of giants. My pal Mr. Money Mustache weighed in with a list of the features that make the MMM site sing. jlcollinsnh reader Mark T. offered technical support and a list of ideas that helped guide the path.

by JL Collins 41 Comments - Updated: February 11, 2016 Just about three years ago jlcollinsnh.com underwent its first redesign and the sweeping changes you have become used to were ushered in. There were lots of reasons for this but the tipping point was when Sean over at Renewable Wealth, in the nicest possible way, said “…your current design makes my eyes bleed.” With that critique ringing in my ears, the goal became a design of “stark elegance” and, not meaning to sound immodest, I think we hit the mark. At least no one has again complained of their eyes bleeding.
