Typically, icing is used less than 48 hours after an injury, whereas heat is appropriate for more chronic pain. Ice will reduce pain, as well as cut down on inflammation and speed the healing process.

Applying ice, however, is not simply taking a bag of ice and leaving it on your injury. To avoid further problems, you should learn how to properly apply ice and ensure your wound heals quickly and efficiently. To ice an injury, first prepare your ice pack, which could be a store-bought, gel-based ice pack, or just a bag of frozen peas. Next, elevate the injured area to reduce swelling, then wrap your ice pack in a towel and apply it to the injury for about 20 minutes. For the best results, repeat this process every two hours, for three days or until the swelling stops. However, be sure to keep in mind that icing is most helpful right after an injury has taken place, while heat is better for sore muscles not associated with a specific injury.
