These tutorials are here to guide you through each step of the research process, helping you build confidence and work more efficiently. Whether you’re selecting a topic, searching the library’s digital collections, using databases, or citing your sources, you’ll find short, practical lessons that make each step easier to understand and apply. You can move through the tutorials in order for a full overview of the research process, or skip ahead to the one that fits your current assignment or question. Think of this page as your research toolbox—ready to support you at any stage of your academic or professional project as you grow as both a learner and educator. While there are a series of basic research steps, it's better to think of research as a process where you will return and repeat previous steps. During your research, your findings may require you to rethink, revise, or adjust your initial research topic and search strategies.

We’ve designed these tutorials to help familiarize you with concepts and skills that will help you seek, evaluate, use, and create information to achieve your personal and academic goals. Our goal with these tutorials is to help you develop information literacy skills. The American Library Association described information literacy as, “a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and to have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use the” needed information effectively. The Introduction to Library Research Tutorials are intended to help you answer questions like, “how should I search for sources?” “can I trust the information I’ve found?” and “How and why do I cite... This Guide is a toolbox for teaching academic research. We hope you will use the tutorials and assignment ideas in your course or class.

Scholarship as Conversation describes the scholarly dialog and where students fit. Research as Inquiry describes the process of choosing a topic, developing a perspective using research. Authority is Contextual - authority depends on context and the reader holding an attitude of informed skepticism. The Introduction to Research tutorial provides students a basic orientation to concepts and practices that will help them complete the research component of an assignment. This tutorial is designed to take roughly 90 minutes to complete. It consists of a combination of text-based, video-based, and activity-based elements. By the end of the Introduction to Research tutorial, students should be able to: The tutorial includes six modules that guide students through a research process: Students are assessed using three challenging quizzes with rotating question banks after modules 2, 4, and 6.
